Stoke City won 1-0 at the Hockey Stadium, Milton Keynes, in a game which saw them pitted against Wimbledon for the fourth time this season, the third time in just two weeks.
The Potters ran out victors after a quickly taken free kick from Peter Hoekstra from 25 yards out, set Clive Clarke free on the left wing. Running to the dead-ball line, Clarke swung a left-footed cross in, which eluded two defenders at the near post, allowing Gifton Noel-Williams to volley the ball into the top of the goal.
Chances for the Potters had been relatively few previously, with Wimbledon fairly dominating the league encounter.
Stoke though, stretch their unbeaten league run to 6 games, with many fans looking closely at the play-off positions.
On a darker note, the end of the match saw a 20-man fracas, after a challenge on Stoke defender Gerry Taggart. Initially involving mainly Wimbledon players and two Stoke men, the hand-bags at ten paces clash resulted in Stoke goalkeeper Ed de Goey being pushed to the ground surrounded by five Wimbledon players, and Richard Johnson being sent from the field. Stoke boss Tony Pulis refused to comment on the fracas initially, but later commented that he was confused as to why Johnson was sent off for The Potters, and as a result, Stoke will be reviewing video evidence with the possibility of an appeal against the card, being pursued.
Further ratification from the FA can also be expected by both teams, as the Football Association try to cut down on such infringements of the law, highlighted by the recent case of Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford.
