The following isn't working anymore:

New: On the very first run of Start11 on a Win10 install, the existing Win10 menu will be imported for the Win10 style including folders. This will not happen for existing customers but if they wish they can import theirs by going into the registry and deleting the following keys and rebooting. Items that do not actually exist locally but are MS advertising for apps will not be imported.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\GroupContents

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Groups

and deleting this key :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8\CreatePinned10

Deleted the relevant keys, rebooted, ran Start11, menu is empty (W10 Style):

Thanks.

Hi,

In comparison to version 1.2, when it was routinely corrupting taskbar and desktop icons for which was only one remedy - restart explorer, at least for now it seems like this problem has been fixed in 1.22 - for several days I am working normally and see no corruption of taskbar and desktop, whcih is good. Drag to open now also work properly for minimized and open windows alike - which is also cool. There are some quirks with this functionality, though, which I will try to record on video and post here when I'll see it. All in all - I am a happy camper now with this release, which seems like much more stable, at least on my system }:>

Start11 1.22 received a 'slipstream' update today that included things in it that should have been prior:

  • Updated translation for the ones noted in the changelog
  • Uninstall survey included

The 'slipstream' is to indicate that it would not prompt current installs to update.  To see these changes one would need to re-download and install manually.

Upon prompt from Start 11, I just clicked to "Download and Install" the new release.  The update window reports "40.20 MB of 40.16 MB" downloaded and the process has apparently frozen.  Nothing more happens.  Only option is to click Cancel Update.  Rinse, repeat, same result.

Hi.  Just installed Windows Insider Dev build 22616 -- my taskbar went TRANSPARENT!

I notice there's a setting in Start11 that mentions this but it's grayed out along with the comment "not currently supported on this prerelease...".

It's sorta cool, but would like to be able to work with it now that it's here.

Thanks! /jim

The new windows dev build has rolled back all taskbar changes finally; however you implemented blocks to prevent dev builds from being able to utilize the transparent taskbar options. They have rolled back to the original taskbar that was released with windows 11 as they want to further refine the new taskbar. How do we enable those options again?

TranslucentTb and other taskbar applications work again.

Current version unknown as About only shows "Version 1.2" (see graphic).

Attempts to upgrade to latest version, presumably 1.22, results in hung application.  Download completes but nothing else happens.  Rebooted the system and same results.

same issue here, if like mine - it is because the download file is corrupt.  Try running the downloaded file directly and it should confirm that for you.  I have tried downloading 1.22 production multiple times and get the same result.

I am using Windows 10 Pro, and have 1.22 beta currently installed without any issues.  So I think this is specific to the Start11_1.22_production.exe download just released, and not something to do with your operating system.

Windows 11 preview 22616 has some note worthy changes

*texture and transparency work again! Options can be restored

*enabling "start 11's taskbar" makes everything on the tail end of the taskbar dissappear

*using "Windows 11's taskbar" is set to transparent by default.

*Update*

I tested start 11 version 1.18 and do not have the dissapearing taskbar buttons on the end of the taskbar. I suspect that the old fix for auto hide is the cause. Since MS rolled back their touch centric taskbar to an older state it is no longer needed.

For the missing system tray on the latest insider build (22616 I think), this can be fixed by adding the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8

Create a new key of type REG_SZ with the Name "OldTaskbarOn11" and give it a value of 1.

Then sign out and in again.

Thanks for the update.  Hopefully, Stardock will update the corrupted installer and notify us.

The web service did not update for the file size change for some reason.  Fixed now.

Sorry for the frustration.

This worked for me. You can go into the Start11 settings and restart explorer from there once you add the key. Thank you for the post!

We do not provide official support for insider releases.

We have an upcoming update due for release next week which should address the unexpected rollback of the taskbar features in Win11.  Microsoft have dumped their new touch aware taskbar and this is causing the issue.

As noted in the post above yours there is a registry key you can add to Start11 which will mitigate most of the issues or you can wait for the update.

---

I should take this moment to remind everyone that unless you have need to run dev/beta channel releases of Windows 11 I would recommend against using them on any computer that you use on a daily basis.  You should assume builds from Microsoft may break anything and third party companies will not provide you with support (or Microsoft either in fact)

App-Badge not working for Mircosoft To Do

The app can be pinned to the taskbar. Once a task on the to do list is overdue a bubble with a number of overdue tasks shows up on the taskbar.

It works on the normal Windows 11 taskbar, and it used to work with Start11. However, it stopped working now.

Any suggestions how to bring this feature back?

Start11 1.22 Changelog

    • Added registry key to make Start11 never group pinned items with running apps - usual reg location "SeparatePins" set to 1
    • Added support for ShowSecondsInSystemClock registry key that worked on Win10 for seconds on the clock. May take a short while to apply after an explorer restart

Thank you for these, I was actually going to post suggestions for both of them.

One possible idea related to the SeparatePins option: it would be nice to be able to keep the pinned 'quick-launch' icons stuck on the left next to the Start button as usual, but to centre any of the more dynamic 'lozenge' items that indicate running programs or open windows. Just a thought anyway.

Hi. I installed yesterday Start11 1.22 which is a blessing for restoring my start menu.

I encountered though a problem: without any aparent reason my start menu keeps change the position to the top of the screen like in the screenshot below. If I restart the system or only windows explorer he regain the normal position - above taskbar.

I google it hoping to find a solution but without any succes.

Is this a bug or there is a setting i can change to stop this behavior? Thank for the help!

I have:

Start11 1.22

Windows 11 Home Edition

Version 21H2 (OS build 22000.613)

Do you use object dock as well?

Hi, I just want to thank Stardock again for providing this app -- it restores so much functionality and preferred aesthetic to the taskbar and start menu!

I am seeing a weird bug on my taskbar though. When I have it set to blur the background (of the taskbar, not the start menu), sometimes (but not consistently) right after minimizing an app, there is a large whiteish blur behind the icon of the minimized app. This white blur extends to the two neighboring apps as well. I'd screenshot it if I could, but as soon as I take a screenshot it disappears. So below is a shot with the area that the blur appears circled (though no blur is visible).

I have my taskbar size set to small, primary position aligned top, blur on, 11% transparency, auto color off. I haven't been able to get the blur to stop showing up altogether except to turn off the blur feature.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or just something that happens with Start11 on Win10.

I'm running Start11 1.22, Windows10Pro64 on a Lenovo Legion laptop

When I first purchased Start11, I could have sworn that a pinned shortcut for Lenovo Vantage showed the icon. Somewhere in the last (or last few) updates, the link still works correctly but the icon is missing, and I just see a blank square above the description. Attempts at unpinning and re-pinning do nothing to correct this. So my workaround was to download an image file from Lenovo, save it to the HD and use Start11 to use a custom tile image.

Is this because Lenovo Vantage is a service and not an actual program link?

This update completely destroyed my install. I've tried uninstalling with removing settings and doing a reboot between uninstalling and reinstalling and it's still hosed.

What happens: after install, everything seems fine and works as expected.

Once I reboot, it looks like start11 didn't initialize properly: I have no start button, no clock, volume, etc. on the right. The system tray arrow is there and I can get to other icons in the system tray. The taskbar's windows are also correctly ungrouped and appear on the appropriate monitor.

When I open Start11's config via either the start menu or the taskbar itself, it says there is some other program managing the taskbar, despite it not having said that before my reboot.

Additionally, it looks like explorer is crashing on startup -- or so says Fences in a popup dialog box.

To note: when installing the update, I did not restart immediately, as I had a game I needed to exit gracefully first, but I rebooted <5 minutes after the update. Also, between uninstalling and reinstalling Start11, I did check the program folder and confirmed that it really did uninstall -- similarly, the settings really did get removed/reset between installations.

I am experiencing the same thing here, it's what I came looking for.
I have not seen the bit about other things managing the taskbar since the first time the issue cropped up though.

When I reboot and log in the taskbar is mostly blank. The solution, for me, is to open taskmanager and restart explorer.exe things seem to run normally after that.

I do have explorer.exe errors in the logs. Sample below:
