MTBF Mean Time Between Failures
excerpt from Saegate data (pdf)
" The production disc drive achieves an MTBF of 1,200,000 hours when operated in an environment that ensures the case temperatures specified in Section 6."
1,200,000 hours is the life expectancy of this paticular hard drive run under optimal installation and considtions.
some feel that shutting a drive down and then spinning it up actually reduces the MTBF because of mechanic wear and tear...

security patches and patches in general should be looked over and a choice should be made to apply it. Microsoft and others release security patches that end up putting more holes in the software than the point it was at when they told you they had something to patch...
Blaster for instance, they came out with patch and created a new hole...
SQL Server, they created critical security patches to cure one security hole that in the end added 3 even more serious security holes...
anyone who just lets MS Update run then apply automatic updates will, *will* learn at some point in time that you should be selective and *you* should make the choice of what you wish installed on your system(s)...
