I am working on a more inclusive crash catcher with the lead Fences dev. That, however, may not point fingers at other apps or settings.

With that, you could start with a process of elimination - enabling apps and services you disabled under the new Windows account, one at a time, to see what one could be causing the crash.

So it would be: enable, reboot, test - rinse \ repeat.

I have Fences working! The culprit appears to have been Recuva (File recovery software). Unbeknownst to me, it installs a menu handler in Explorer. Happy Camper here, now! |-)

Hi, Robert reported that the problem on his computer was Recuva. Unfortunately, I don't have Recuva installed on mine.

I don't have the time or energy to perform the diagnostic steps you recommended. I will content myself with using 3.0.9 for now, which is working great.

Thanks!

The issue with that course, however, is that 3.10 will be the only version available when released - you won't be able to get 3.09 should you need to reinstall Fences in the future.

If you change your mind and want to do the test, we would certainly welcome the effort and feedback.

I just installed the Fences 3.10 beta. After reboot, it crashes explorer.  No option to enable when right-clicking the desktop.

Running Windows 10 v21H1.

Had Recuva installed.  Uninstalled it and rebooted.  Still have the same problem.  No change!

I have also just made this:

https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#ExtendedCrashReporting

It's a way for us to get more crash data.  So, if you did not want to do what Robert did, if you could at least follow those directions, re-install 3.10, get us the crash data, we would have more to go on.  We suspect like Robert discovered, it will likely be a 3rd party app (also running in the Windows Explorer process) but we can make a more educated guess with more data.

Is there any update on mitigating this issue I posted earlier (reply #5):

I'm using the most recent beta and I've discovered an issue. I'm using a laptop with 2 external displays (I don't use the laptop display). I have the following problem whenever the laptop turns off the external displays and then wakes them: All of the fences move the the primary display (I usually have them arranged on my secondary display). I have to restore a snapshot to get them back on the correct monitor. Also, any changes I made after the last snapshot are undone. This is not an issue when I restart the computer. The fences stay as I left them when I restart my computer.

Messes up the system tray, date etc.

After a while it disappeared altogether.

Please upvote the following bug https://aka.ms/AAcr4gx

This is a bug in Windows Explorer caused by the latest Microsoft patches and having > 100% scaling set on your primary monitor and having hidden the News and Interests link on the taskbar.  It impacts other products too (like Groupy which the link is for as thats the first app we hit the issue with) and happens with Microsoft tools too like Spy++ running.

When I have fences beta 3.1.0.5 and Wallpaper Engine 1.5.42 installed together the wallpaper will not change when Wallpaper Engine is initiated. If the wallpaper has music to it the music will play, but the wallpaper from will not display until I disable fences and change the priority to high priority on wallpaper engine (changing the priority before disabling fences has no effect). This happened right after the new beta version of fences was installed.

Fences beta doesn't work for me at all, even after following the clean boot instructions. My icons were missing. I was able to get them back by right-clicking the desktop and choosing "Show Desktop Icons", but they were scattered all over the desktop.

Instead of "Configure Fences" at the top of my right-click menu, I had "Start Fences". Clicking that did nothing.

I had to reinstall Fences 3.0.9.11.

I'm using Windows 21H1 (build 19043, 1052).

Just to let you know. I uninstalled beta version of fences and they both work together again.

I had exactly the same problem. I had to revert back to last stable version of fences. Never had a problem upgrading before and this makes me nervous about future upgrades.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Well, it needs to be resolved as when 3.10 is released, 3.09 will not be available should you need it again.

For any that have the issue, I needed to know that a purge and clean boot (in that order) were done:

https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot

When in that state, and with 3.10 installed, please report back with what condition the PC is in, with screenshots / video, and what you have done to try and resolve it.

Quoting Catnip, reply 46

Instead of "Configure Fences" at the top of my right-click menu, I had "Start Fences".

If you have performed the purge and the PC is in a clean boot state (new Windows account and only MS services running + Fences enabled in the startup as the directions indicate), please post a screenshot of that.
