No documentation for list of buttons

Without guide it's not possible to make choices, such as changing color of X in upper right-hand corner to close a window. Do I use Skin Studio for this?

No. SkinStudio is only for WindowBlinds.

Hello,
No, you don't need Skin Studio for Curtains and there is no guide available. You just need to edit things in the "Edit" section. All the parts, buttons and frames that can be change is quite easy to figure out and there is not many items to change, well at least not as many as Windowblinds. The advance part is for advance things. Not really need to work with those if you just need to change the buttons. Use the buttons for that. Most of the section get small explanation box to help you what it for.

So here is problem. I tried using the graphic above to create the look I want -- no red thank you very much -- by creating a PNG file with different background color, but it didn't work well.

Left is original close window, center is after selecting PNG of 78x78px solid color, right is completely wrong end result.

All I want to do is have different color background under X. Should be simple but doesn't seem to be.

It looks like you edited the glyph not the background.

To edit it just do the following :

1) Edit the style in Curtains

2) Go to the Buttons tab

3) Find the close button

4) Find the active background in the drop down

5) Point this to a FOUR part image (as there are four states, Normal, Mouseover, Pressed and Disabled).  This part will stretch using margins.

6) Do the same for the inactive background (or mouseover inactive windows may show red)

7) Apply

Wow!!! Thank You!! This was precisely what I needed to know and couldn't find.

Stardock Forum participants are one of the highlights of using Stardock software, and I can't express my appreciation enough for your reply. It goes into my how-to file for future reference.

My only really disappointment with Stardock is insufficient to nonexistent documentation.

Cheers

Now that I have desired background for Close button I tried changing background for Minimize in a different color, but it creates background for both Minimize and Maximize. I assume each of three buttons can have individual color?

Minimize and maximize have the same background image currently unless you use the advanced sections accessed on the advanced tab.
