i have my product key but it wont accept it

i've played this game for a decade and got a new computer i re-downloaded it from here over 3 computer changes with no issues and it gave me the product key like it always does and now it keeps asking me for a serial number? isn't that the product key ? Now i've long lost the disk and case a long long long time ago so what do i do ?

I'm afraid there is little we can do about physical copies if you lost the serial key. Did you ever use Impulse or Steam?
