Is Microsoft going to own the next generation DVD format?

I think Microsoft is going to own the next generation DVD format. And I don’t say that as a Microsoft booster. I think it’s just the route that is going to make the most sense.

When I bought the new Terminator 2 DVD, the second DVD came with the full movie at 1080P (that’s P, not I) which is essentially super-duper High Definition TV. It was all in a collection of .WMV files and it all fit on a single DVD.

Moreover, with a computer with a DVD drive, I could watch this DVD on any screen – regular TV or the various other HDTV standards. It would just scale to whather and do so pretty seamlessly.

What I predict is that you’ll see new DVDs come with support for WMV files. Think about it, one DVD holding a 1080P (1080 lines of resolution) movie. Right now, most DVDs get filled up with a single 480P movie because they are so poorly compressed.

So Microsoft will end up owning the next generation format. This is a market Apple could have owned.

The HDTV DVD is not an actual new format. It is based on existing DVD patents not owned by MS. MS is licencing WindowsMedia technologies to chip manufacturers. These sell their chips to consumer good vendors. The license fees of the other technologies involved (which are not owned by MS) are much larger than the WindowsMedia license fee. BTW, the WindowsMedia license fee has also been reduced last year.

It is common in the games industry to pay for the release of a console game. Whether it is XBOX, PS/2, Nintendo, etc. In fact MS is doing it relatively fair when compaired to the others. MS is one of the few companies which has a SDK that is available even before actual contracts are being signed. How do I know this? I am a games engine developer and have worked in the games industry for years.

Agreed. There are more contenders. The fact that Sony and Philips are behind it makes it very viable that they will get enough market support. Microsoft's effortrs to enter that market will fail. But at the same time they have ATI and NVIDIA support for their WindowsMedia version on the PC. Maybe they hope that Corona will be their ticket to bring the format to the consumer good market. The next question is if MS will get enough content?

I have every right to dislike MS as much as I want. I don't have to like MS taking over the DVD format if they do. I don't have to bow down to MS. I don't have to think Bill Gates is a saint.

I have only recently returned to this community, and im tired of your non-stop bashing of microsoft adready. IMHO, microsoft really does know what most people want, and I'm one of happier customers. While I hope microsoft never becomes a monopoly ( never good, that ), microsoft is a really big company for a reason. They got a good biz sense and really do try to do what customers want.

Sure, microsoft has flaws. you, me and everyone else has flaws. anything ran by people is flawed too, that incudes even Holy Apple company ( holy, according to some of fastics(sp). Even worse, LINUX is flawed too!

In short, everything is flawed, but someone that complains and vent a lot of the hot air about tiny flaws in anything has a very, very large flaw indeed.

Could have been an interesting read without that MS hate-sermons... I am so sick of it. As said (and totally ignored by You) on another thread : I work with MS products at all the time (and I tried alternatives) and I have not more problems as others have with competing products. And that X-Box example was absolutely silly. There are still many other consoles out there. Again bashing without having researched at all. I wish we had a posting-filter here.

I wonder why a site named Wincustomize attracts You filled with MS-slaves and people blind for that other 'superior' OS. You should also deal with the fact, that others don't share Your blind hate, although being critical towards MS (where it is due).
