Idea for a difficult optional side mission in Star Control Origins II or <insert title here>
I had a thought on the difficult task ![]()
Picture it... Sicily 1913... \*cough* I mean Space 2178
After 18 months of deep cover exploration of Scryve space in a salvaged Scryve cruiser, the crew has perfected their Scryve Naval Fleet impersonation and puppeteering skills to travel through the territory mostly unhindered, have returned with not only a large cache of information on the Scryve Empire but also an ancient device that appears to be of precursor design...
First Lt: Captain, we should bring this to the nearest Precursor Star Base to have it analyzed and possibly disposed of as it's creepier than the time I had to sit with a room full of Tywom.
Starbase: Oh my, what do you have there? It appears to be a long dormant offline database redundancy module...
<insert small electrical explosion, and fire suppression system going off>
Starbase: Very interesting, some more data became available to me momentarily and each of the starbases got a database update as well... Huh this isn't making much sense, maybe this clue will mean something to you as I've seen your race is very curious and likes to do stuff with no logic to back it up. In a solar system long long ago many lightyears away from here there was a cluster of 3 small stars on a collision course that hid a secret even our creators wanted to hide so it didn't fall into the wrong hands.
<At an undisclosed solar system, drifting in a dead planetoid>
First Lt: Captain! We've found something... well part of something... well part of a blueprint of something... and by my guess what we have is only about 1/20th of a full blueprint. This may or may not be worth our time Captain.
<Upon finding the last Blueprint Part and returning to a Precursor Starbase>
Starbase: Amazing, after analyzing what you brought me, this blueprint has the capability of building a very versatile flagship of unknown capabilities, however until all the base parts are found your primitive human flagship is far more useful to you.
<The starbase sends you on another wild goose chase for parts, upon completion it'll replace your Flagship and upon full upgrade will segue into the third game>
-- Think of it as an optional mission on par with fighting all the ultimate weapons in Final Fantasy VII.
