"WASHINGTON (AP) -- Illegally download copyright music from the Internet once, or even twice, and you get a warning. Do it a third time, and your computer gets destroyed.

That's the suggestion made by the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee at a Tuesday hearing on copyright abuse, reflecting a growing frustration in Congress over failure of the technology and entertainment industries to protect copyrights in a digital age.

The surprise statement by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, that he favors developing technology to remotely destroy computers used for illegal downloads represents a dramatic escalation in the increasingly contentious rhetoric over pirated music.

I'm interested," Hatch interrupted. He said damaging someone's computer "may be the only way you can teach somebody about copyrights.

If we can find some way to do this without destroying their machines, we'd be interested in hearing about that," Hatch said. "If that's the only way, then I'm all for destroying their machines. If you have a few hundred thousand of those, I think people would realize" the seriousness of their actions"

Proposals like this does nothing but turn more and more people against copyright holders.

What if a person is mistakenly accused of downloading illegal material and gets his computer destroyed? Thanks a lot for destroying my $1000 investment.

What if someone rips cd's they own to listen to them across their network/on their mp3 player?

lol, sounds a bit extreme indeed, just surfing the web, download a few media files witch are FREELY distributed by a little band that waits to become famous and.... there goes your pc.

Btw, how are they going to do this? building c4 in your 'machine'?

Nah, just seriously, the only thing that could work is sending a so called 'ping of death'.
This means you get a file send that is too large for your processor to handle, and it blows itself up.

Asfar as I know win XP blocks this....

I don't like the idea that even if someone else uses my computer and DLs a song then MY computer gets fried. That is pure political BS. Instead, Hatch should look into getting Kazaa shut down.

Actually it quite easy:
1. shut down the main Kazaa website
2. pull all the download links from places like zdnet

After all that, only people with Kazaa now would be able to keep using it but No new members....

My party unlike the other two major ones, believe in gun rights. that is the only reason i chose my party. They ain't taking my guns. I define gun control different then most: If you can put 2 shots in the same hole from 500 yards, thats gun control...

Anyways, i do not think the idea about frying a computer is going to work.

Well that cure is worse than the crime. There is supposed to be a presumption of innocence and a trial by ones peers in civilized societies. A denial of service attack on one that is supposed to be presumed innocent until proven otherwise I think would be the real crime. Don't think this one is going too far, it's just the rhetoric of someone on a witch hunt. Law enforcement has to remain within the law, otherwise ya won't know the good guys from the bad.

Law enforcement, law makers, and the executive branch are essentially above the law.

Mind you, this is specifically one of the things we, as America, are supposed to be absolutely against, but it's become the norm.
