...but one I can't seem to find the answer to. Is it possible to use transparent backgrounds in userpics? If so, how? I've tried trial-and-error, and so far have only managed to achieve error.

When I've tried it, it always replaced it with a white background. Therefore, I don't think it's possible.

You could make the background of your userpic the same color as the theme's userpanel though.
