Huge problems with PC Steam version need help (Sean)

Main screen bug with AU-text-text-text and crash (Sean)

https://forums.starcontrol.com/491326/page/1/#reply

Hi there, when I just installed the game I noticed the main screen is bugged to me. I have not: new game/load game/options, but all with AU/new game/text and I can't see all options on the screen. Tried resolutions, not fixing this. Even in game planets have Ui/earth/text instead of just Earth. The second problem is the game crashes when I try to enter any planet. I tried help from your website known fixes, but there are no problems with UI texts, just crashes. Even that I tried fixing a crash problem with making 5096 memory. Nothing helped.

Your forum even has a limit of replays. Jezz why I bought this game

Some guy from tech support: Can you send me your run log and settings files?  Both can be found here: \My Games\Star Control

First of all, there is no Star control in my games if I need to find it in my documents. Maby cause its steam I don't know. And I couldn't find these files elsewhere.

So that's it I can delete this game?

Hold on.  Let me help you find your RunLog.txt and settings.ini

I am using Steam (I am not part of Stardock) and this is where mine are (my username is linux):

C:\Users\linux\OneDrive\Documents\My Games\Star Control\RunLog.txt

C:\Users\linux\OneDrive\Documents\My Games\Star Control\settings.ini

I don't know what your username is, so please go to:

C:\Users

Do that by typing C:\Users in the bar at the top of File Explorer

And double click the folder that is not: Public, TEMP, TEMP DESKTOP, Default.migrated, Default User, Default, nor All Users (the one folder left should be your user folder)

Then double click on OneDrive

Then double click on Documents

Then double click on My Games

Then double click on Star Control

Then send RunLog.txt and settings.ini to Stardock

If that does not work then maybe your Star Control folder is not in OneDrive

Please go to:

C:\Users

Do that by typing C:\Users in the bar at the top of File Explorer

And double click the folder that is not: Public, TEMP, TEMP DESKTOP, Default.migrated, Default User, Default, nor All Users (the one folder left should be your user folder)

Then double click on Documents

Then double click on My Games

Then double click on Star Control

Then send RunLog.txt and settings.ini to Stardock

I'm using windows and I don't have Star Control folder in my username document files. I looked in my games there are all my game saves, but no Star Control, Mabie it's in steam cloud, but I can't find it. I checked OneDrive, but it's not there too.

I never had this problem in other game and I have 648 games on my Steam account.

What I see Star Control is still one big mess and probably ill go for a refund if developers will act like now...

If you're running Windows10 and you have an installation of StarControl 'somewhere' on your PC then do a simple Windows search.

Open File Explorer, click "This PC', and do a search for RunLog.txt on your drive. If the file is found, then select it, right-click to bring up the menu, and open the file location. You'll see the settings file there as well.

Maby on you it's different, but on me its whole new story. I have Star Control only in main Steam folder

Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Control - Origins and there is no RunLog.txt there.

I tried Windows search not helping.

Chances are it's your system set up. You may not have whitelisted your game folder or else the game with your antivirus program and so you've hit permissions issues. Which is probably why you don't have a run log - because it can't be written there. Because of your permissions issues you probably have hit the same thing as JBuck406, meaning that you have an incomplete installation of DXSETUP, NDP471blahblahblah, vc_redist.x64. See https://forums.starcontrol.com/491329/get;3728572 for a suggestion. Once you've run those, try doing a game file integrity check.

Good luck.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Even that I tried fixing a crash problem with making 5096 memory. Nothing helped.

Please, for testing DO NOT limit your page file / virtual memory (if that is what you mean here).  Please see the FAQ here to see how to set to let Windows itself manage it:

I'm using windows and I don't have Star Control folder in my username document files.

Whenever I read that, that folder / files cannot be created by an app, I have seen 'Windows Controlled Folder Access' be the cause.  Please use this to turn it off:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4046851/windows-10-allow-blocked-app-windows-security

If that fails, and still leaving the virtual memory to Windows Controlled and Controlled Folder access off, I want you to do the 'clean boot' also noted in the FAQ (near the bottom) it's the most efficient way to get out from under any third party app / setting that may be causing issues.

https://forums.starcontrol.com/491043/star-control-origins-support-faq

Thanks for your patience - we will work out what the issue is.

sdRohan Bro, its the case. I just did that and verified game. All UI nonsense disappeared. I bet now its all gone work fine.

So if anyone in the future will have a problem with UI-long texts on the main screen, just :

Select Start  > Settings  > Update & Security  > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.

  • Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
  • Under Controlled folder access, select Manage Controlled folder access.
  • Switch the Controlled folder access setting to On or Off.

Maby in future make some kind of update where windows won't see your game as a threatening virus, cause now my windows safety less effective, but anyway I suggest dropping this problem and problem-solving in https://forums.starcontrol.com/491043/star-control-origins-support-faq
