Windows 10 virtual desktop support?

only group windows of the same app on same virtual desktop

Currently I'm using the virtual desktop feature in windows 10.
I found a issue, when grouped app in, say, desktop 1.
Then I jump to desktop 2, and I launch another instance of the same app which is the one in grouped app on desktop 1.
However, this will cause this instance of app would bring the grouped app on desktop 1 to desktop 2.
Could you team add the limitation that only group windows of the same app on same virtual desktop?

Just purchased groupy, but this is the biggest thing bothering me. If Groupy could just only include the current desktop in its grouping behavior, that'd be really nice

Groupy should not be grouping things between virtual desktops as things changed since 2018.

Are you able to provide a specific example of when this is happening and are you running the latest version of Groupy?

it doesnt necessarily group them on different desktops, i guess my experience is a bit different from the original topic, sorry for not explaining it

what happens for me is if i move a grouped window into another virtual desktop, it still is part of the group on a different desktop, so clicking other tabs in that groupy group will whiz me over to the original virtual desktop, which is jarring and not exactly expected functionality

so my proposition is if a window is moved to another desktop, to ungroup it from that original groupy group

and yes im all up to date

I had reported this problem maybe about a year ago when I was using Insider Previews of Windows 10. You back then refused to even look at it, because you wouldn't support beta versions of Windows.

The problem still remains: Grouped windows from one desktop are being pushed to other (virtual) desktops when you create a group, or an explorer window there.

How to reproduce:

  1. Have two virtual desktops (or more) configured.
  2. Set explorer windows to group automatically (optional) in Groupy settings.
  3. Create a group with two Explorer windows on one of the desktops. Let's call them here 'Music' and 'Video' for demonstration.
  4. Switch to the other desktop and create a new Explorer window, let's call it 'Documents' here.
  5. Attached will be one of the two Explorer windows from the first Desktop, grouped automatically. So 'Documents' will be grouped with 'Music', even though 'Music' belongs onto the first desktop with 'Video'.

This happens all the time. I guess most people don't use virtual desktops, even though it's baked into Windows, so not too many people report it.

For the record: Latest version of regular Windows 11 (no Insider), latest version of Groupy. Happened since a year or even longer on various versions of Groupy and Windows 10 and 11.

Is there a solution on this?

I am using latest version of groupy 2 and win 11.  I get switched between desktops all the time. I am almost ready to unistall groupy for this reason. groupy should have an option to use all of its rules ONLY in the current desktop.

thank you very much for the update. I am looking forward for a solution on this.

Don't get your hopes up. This is the default cookie-cutter semi-automatic response they give all bug reports here (and just see the first reply on this thread). As soon as Windows supported tabs in Explorer I uninstalled Groupy and haven't looked back.

Groupy should be factoring in the current desktop but it may be the group operation is taking place before the window is technically associated with a virtual desktop.

We shall do some more investigating as autogrouping changed significantly in the 2.15 beta recently.

But its not explorer that i am using groupy for.  I have some software that i open different sessions of them, or some programs that are associated between them and i want them organized in such a way. Hope there is a fix on this.

There is a tweak in the latest Beta update released today for virtual desktops. Not sure if it will fix your issue, but it's worth a try.

  • Tweaked group joining to factor in the current virtual desktop more for auto-grouping
