These are going to start coming pretty often as we get nearer release.

This artist's concept depicts the most up-to-date information about the shape of our own Milky Way galaxy

If nothing else, you will leave this game knowing a lot more about the geography of our galaxy and how big it really is.

Star Control: Origins concerns itself with a 140x140 light year sector of the Orion's Spur.  And that's a pretty huge area.  Thousands and thousands of planets.  I don't know how many stars we'll end up with but probably close to a 800.  There's about 500 within 100 light years of u s (in the real world).

If you guys would like your alien in the game, we are looking for 512x512 portraits.

Just post them as PNGs and how you'd like credit and I'll find a place for them if I can.

Sorry but I feel like I totally missed this detail about contributing an alien portrait to the game. I had not heard of this yet. I thought we were getting the opportunity to name a planet and maybe the chance at having ship submissions included in the game if they are clever enough.

I've seen pretty much all the news updates posted here but nothing about this. Can you fill us in a little more?

Sure.

So one of the more recent additions we've made is the ability to have conversations that are not full on leader scenes.  This lets us have a lot more aliens because we only have to show portraits (a 512x512 thumbnail).  

So anyone who wants to try their hand at creating them, go for it.

So... say we have a neat alien idea but aren't as talented as the artists over at Stardock. Will you guys be taking submissions or sketches and turning them into full thumbnail illustrations to make them look cohesive with the rest of the game's design? I would imagine having so many different alien portrait art styles would seem a little strange, no?

More likely people will share alien thumbnails with each other.

Alright, sure. That is terrific, but user created content being shared wasn't the premise...

Are these submissions going to just be inserted into portions of the campaign as NPCs then? Is there some kind of standard Stardock will apply to them to maintain consistency with the look of the game?

Others have expressed similar questions about this. We don't understand the criteria of this and are not as skilled as the artists at Stardock.

Probably not. If they aren’t able to be used there’s always Steam workshop.

A stray thought: between the planned leader races, the inclusion of classic SC races, and now this feature, will our little piece of the galaxy in SCO feel overpopulated?

It's an alternate universe, so I'm not worried about it being "wrong," more just wondering if it will impact the game feel of flying though empty space to explore and finding out it's really not that empty, or if it might impact the "uniqueness" of First Contact if it happens 30 times throughout the game.
