Hey thanks. I really enjoy Whittle's essays and wasn't aware that he had written a new one.

Good article, but Carl Sagan? Maybe he was grounded in reality at one point in his life, but he eventually fell prey to the very "magic" he was supposedly debunking. Doesn't anyone remember "Contact"?

Only four responses, hmmm. What does that say (if anything)?

critical thinking is frequently a two-edged sword, and is very difficult in some realms like religion. No one can prove that God exists, or that He doesn't exist. As the writer pointed out, even if one side of the argument could furnish proof, most of the opposing side would not fold in the face of proof simply because it's not what they want to believe.

True, but once Sagan dispensed with God, he proceeded to profess a believe in alien salvation. Seems like he just substituted one god for another.

My points are:

1. maybe its in our nature to believe in something.

2. Science was not supposed to be used anywhere but in the physical world. Applying it to "spiritual" matters is inappropriate.

3. Scientific knowledge is not the only form of knowledge.
