Beta feedback

Some initial feedback having played all the previous Star Controls plus Ur Quan Masters:

  - Please have a LAN option for multiplayer melee (used this all the time with the kids)

  - Introduce a random ship selector during battle

  - Create ship names with personality.  In SC2, we had the Chmmr Avatar, Supox Blade and Spathi Eluder to name just a few.  In this beta, we have the Menkmack Ship, Trandals Ship and Mowlings Ship.

  - I'm sure the audio isn't finalised yet but when it is make sure it has a "space" feel to it.  I've always felt Star Control is a mysterious space adventure game and the soundtrack needs to reinforce this.  Also, each race needs it's own high quality custom theme music.

  - Not a fan of the asteroids that ring the melee region.  Being able to keep your enemy at a distance, along with using an always repeating map with no edges, were key tactics in head-to-head battles.  I can remember using the primary weapon on the Druuge Mauler many times to build up momentum in battle, allowing the ship to move incredibly fast with the maps repeating.  Keeping an Ur Quan Dreadnought at distance with an Earthling Cruiser, whilst turning around to unleash fire and forget nukes, also made for a memorable battle.

Keep up the good work.

I hadn't even noticed that they hadn't named the ships yet.  They should all have some type of name that has some kind of meaning related to the lore of the species.  You don't want a militaristic ADC/G-1701 Eluder, that doesn't fit the SC universe, but some type of name really does add a lot more than most might imagine that it does on a psychological level.

You will be able to create custom games so that you can play with your kids and such pretty seamlessly.

Right now, I play with my son with the laptop connected the the TV.  He's currently grounded. And no, I'm not a sore loser. He's a BAD boy.

Agree on random ship selector.

Yea, some of the text strings are still programmer names. They aren't using the names from the design document yet.

There will eventually be lots of arenas.  The one in Beta 1 is like the most generic one to get an idea of how the game even runs.  Since you posted this, that means the beta didn't format your computer's hard drive.  Success!
