Tech question...

I've been using a cable modem for a long time, but won't be able to have that anymore.  I am going to be stuck with download speed 10 mbs, upload 2 mbs on a wireless connection.

Is that even fast enough to play games these days?

Oh please, that's still faster than a lot of the planet has to contend with, and they do fine. 10mbps isn't ADSL/fibre speeds but it's still pretty reasonable.

I don't know much about the meaning of modern speeds.  I grew up with 1200bps, 14k was a revolutionary breakthrough, haha.

Thanks for the answer, that is very good news.  I was worried it might not be fast enough for games today, that's very good news that it is.

You'll be fine. A lot of netcode still used in games was designed back when people still had those 14.4k modems! Some more modern games will be expecting more, but 2 up and 10 down is absolutely fine - anyone who designed a game that sent so much data that that wasn't enough would a) be a bad coder and b) be preventing a massive chunk of the potential customer base from playing the game...

And if I can get all Monty Python for a sec, my first modem 300baud. 1200 would have been luxury to us... ;-)

I don't think you'll have any issues with your speeds - possible you might hit issues with higher latency on the wireless link. Shouldn't be much of an issue if only social gaming, just check your latency before trying to chase down ranked positions on leader boards.

That's double what I get.  You'll be fine.

Cool.  I went from 14k to DSL to a cable modem and had a cable modem for the last 15 years or so.  Once I had a cable modem I stopped paying attention to modem speeds because it didn't matter.  It was "futuristic fast" compared to what I had grown up with.  I started "online" on a Franlklin 1100 (Apple II+ clone) and a 1200 baud modem, so once I had a cable modem "speed" wasn't really relevant anymore.

I was worried my FPS/action gaming days might be over and I'd only be able to player slower paced games online.  That would have sucked a lot.  Now I can look forward to playing SCO and getting back to Mech Warrior Online as the FPS game I had been playing lately.  Now I just need to wait what people are saying is usually 2-4 weeks for them to come out to the edge of the mountains to install it.

BTW, my new "retirement place" is about 3 miles away from two dormant volcano called the Spanish Peaks.  They are not a part of the Rocky Mountains, they are 13,000-foot dormant volcano a few miles in front of the foothills.  When there is one of those rainbow sunsets the volcanic rock Spanish Peaks appear to be a deep bright shade of purple.  They are famous mountains because they are about 100 miles south of Pike's Peak, where America the Beautiful was written, and it is believed that the guy who wrote that song had passed by the Spanish Peaks on the way to Pike's Peak.  So the actual "purple mountains majesty" are towering above the view from my front porch.
