What can be stated outside the Founders' zone?

So this week the Steam page for SCO will go live, that means the discussion board will also be up. Undoubtedly there will be lots of people with questions so I thought it would be best to make a list of what can and can't mentioned outside the Founders' program.

[a]listdaily Interview with Brad Wardell

What can be mentioned

  • Multivers, separate universes for SC1/2/GotP, SC3 and Origins
  • Stardock didn't want to use the Ur-Quan Conflict aliens because Paul and Fred wanted to work on their own sequel
  • Moding tools, no pictures
  • Paul and Fred receive a royalty from Stardock for products that use their lore

What can't be mentioned

  • Images, videos, audio files, any file that haven't been made publicly available by Stardock
  • Spoilers for adventure mode, especially the Xraki
  • Paul and Fred's discussions with Stardock
  • Plans for classic ships DLC, maybe we can say there is a possibility, but nothing concrete
  • The existence of the expansion Eternal and Infinite

Unsure / Would like a comment from Brad

There might be more, but that is all I can think about for now.

I don't believe we should have had that mentioned to us either. That was a huuuuuuge bummer.

Though as long as their ship is in SM won't people figure out something is up with them?

Not necessarily, no. The Androsynth were in SCII super melee...

I had a conversation with Paul and Fred this past weekend on some of this too.

Their #1 concern is that they don't want the two games stepping on each other so we are likely to coordinate with them (sort of like we did with the announcement) as we go forward.

The points Rhonin brings up are spot on.

  1. We don't want any unauthorized screenshots or streaming of the game.  We will actually have a special press branch for that.
  2. We can't commit to officially having the SC1/2/3 ships in the game.  What I can say is that if they are, it'll be a DLC for royalty reasons.
  3. Don't bring up Eternal & Infinite.  People got the impression that we are splitting our focus. 100% of our focus is on a Star Control 2 style game.
  4. You can talk about the modding tools all you'd like.  Just don't show images yet.

Regarding the wiki I'll see what I can do, I plan to reorganize the species list for a start and after I get the classic games see about taking some pictures.

Can we also add stuff about Ghosts of the Precursors on it?

Absolutely.

Eventually we want it to cover all things Star Control including the various universes it touches on.

People have asked me why we didn't use the GalCiv aliens in Star Control and it's the same as the main reason we aren't using the Ur-Quan aliens: We can't tie Star Control to a single universe.

A couple years ago, people were skeptical on that explanation but I think ME: Andromeda drove the point home.  You tie your space adventure game to a single universe and pretty soon you're reaching hard to come up with some epic story.

The Ur-Quan Masters is such an epic story.  The Ur-Quan civil war with one side wanting to enslave us and the other side wanting to exterminate us all occurring right after the defeat of the humans and their allies.  That's compelling.

Now, the Ur-Quan story touched on what Ghosts will likely deal with which is where they went to and how the Orz and such tie into that.  But what do you do after that?

Movies can get away with rebooting their stories every once in awhile.  It's a lot harder for games.  Can you imagine the outcry if we had called the new game just Star Control and retold the Ur-Quan story?

The Origins universe has a lot of lore and we've built up over the past several years.  It's a rich universe now.  But it's not an infinite universe any more than Star Trek or Star Wars and so on.   We already the next two adventures in the Origin universe outlined and they are very compelling.   But having other universes for people to visit greatly extends the game's scale.

^ Is SCO main story as epic as SC2?

Will Stardock be helping Fred & Paul with distribution or will their parent company be doing that? If Activision aren't involved and it's their own project they have been given the green light on couldn't they go to anyone for help or is it a tricky subject?

Also, already planning two adventures, is this going to be post launch DLC, or possible directions for sequels if Origins does well? Either way sign me up, as long as we dont end up going down the Star Control 3, or StarCon route, and as much care is taken in every Star Control project Stardock undertakes I'll be there to buy it 😅

You already have, if you're a lifetime founder...

Neither, Activision-Blizzard are only allowing Paul and Fred to work on it in their free time and without the assistance of a publisher.

i think so. We have the advantage of introducing all new characters. In sc2 you already knew the bad guys.
