Galactic Civilization III "Classic" Edition

Hey folks,

v2.5 is a massive update for the base game. Unfortunately, the update was so big that we were unable to support old save games. To make up for this, we are making v2.33 available for all players as GalCiv3 Classic so you can keep playing older save games. The process for accessing it is similar to opt-ins:

  • Select 'Galactic Civlizations III' in your Steam Library list
  • Right-click and select Properties
  • Select the BETAS tab
  • From the dropdown, select "GalCiv3Classic - v2.33 release" and click Close (if you don't see this option, restart Steam).

Steam should pull down the changed files; if you ever want to go back, do the same as above but select default.

You know, you would have saved a lot of grief if you'd made 2.5 "opt-in" with a notice that it invalidates saved and on-going games.

Instead, you/Steam released it as "back-out", meaning I have to jump through hoops to get back to where I was this morning!  NOT HAPPY. #:(

But thanks for the post.  At least it is possible to get back.

Sorry for the confusion.  We've had an opt-in up for awhile now with a notice that saves wouldn't be compatible.  We will communicate that better next time.

Up where?

Other than the fact that finding anything on Steam is like hunting snipe, that back-out was pretty quick.  Thanks.

Betas are only for elite founders.

I said this on the steam forums, but it is worth repeating here, thank you for giving us players this choice.

the beta opt was open for 2.5 for like a week or more to everyone. it was never only for elite founders. betas for games not released sure, that makes sense to limit to founders.

Oh sorry i never knew that because im an elite founder.

Not true! Crusade beta was available to all elite founders 2 days before release. And only because people complained.

First being an elite founder i already admitted to being wrong. I felt for you guys we crusaders had an option to let you guys into the beta. I voted yes, but someone that i will not mention voted they should review 70 html files first, so you guys wont report identical bugs. So he waited 2 weeks to review the html files first. Even though the above statement is true technically if you guys would have stayed on, or went to discord you guys would have got the beta. I played 2.0 untill i got the beta.

Annoying that there isn't some method to convert the saves, but as long as it is easy to switch to 2.33, then this is fine.   some better communication in the update release notes would have been preferable to having to search for answers.

I started an insane sized game a few weeks ago and it would be a shame to lose it   After I finish it, I'll be happy to go to 2.5.   Hopefully  you'll have all the kinks worked out by then as it seems there are a ton of bugs.    Too bad more testing wasn't done.

Update:  holy cow,  I'm still waiting for Classic mode to install, it's been over a half hour and it's still validating files.    This is ridiculous!

Update2:  Dude!  4 and a half hours later and it's still validating files!!!

Something's wrong.  My revert was very quick - less than minute?  And I'm not on a high-end machine.

Interestingly, some of the 2.5 features (like the Tech selection screen) are still present in 2.3.3 after the revert.

If it was less than a minute, then it didn't completely update.  I would suggest restarting steam and possibly verifying files.

Yep something was wrong.

I uninstalled the game and reinstalled, but instead of constantly validating files, It kept saying I needing an update.  I updated, it wanted another update, I kept updating, but it never stopped.

I restarted steam and validated files as you suggested, but it still had the same issue.

I then uninstalled the game and went into the steamapps folder and saw that some leftover content was still there, and assuming something was corrupt, I deleted the entire galactic civilizations folder and redownloaded, and STILL had the issue.   But this time I noticed a very small message (way to almost completely hide the error message steam) that a file was locked for some reason.   I tried restarting steam again, but no dice.

I finally rebooted Windows (Win10 Pro, Creators update, x64 btw) and after that, it updated again, but this time it appears it was successful and I then changed to classic mode and as you said earlier, it was pretty quick this time around and I appear to be able to load my save games.

Sheesh that was a headache.

Thank you all.

I'm glad that you are up and running again.   Do you recall what file was locked?  That's not something we can control but I would like to find out how it happened.

Fyi I've been having locked file issues ever since the 2.5 Opt-In first went up, and still am. I don't know which files are locked b/c nothing tells me. It appears to be random and different every time, and doesn't happen at first, only after I've been modding for 15 minutes to 2 hours. But when I go to save an edited XML file in my text editor for example, it will complain about not running in Administrator Mode all of a sudden, after having been saving fine for a while before that. If I then relaunch the text editor in Administrator Mode and try the save again, Windows says there was an unexpected error, and nothing else.

Interestingly, I found that restarting my PC does NOT help at all - whichever file it was, it still won't save. BUT, if I log out of Windows and then back in (this is Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, btw), it's back to normal again, at least for a while. Since relogging is significantly faster than rebooting, I found this very helpful to know lol.

But yes when I hadn't tried saving any text files recently, but was copying files around between different versions of GC3 and/or different versions of my mod for example, the game would occasionally load fine but crash when attempting to start a new test game. I found that relogging out/back-into Windows also fixed this whenever it happened, so it seems like locked files were to blame again, but I don't know which ones. It seems like it can be any of them in the GC3 folder, at random, but I don't know for sure.

This bugger i had a while back. The problem is that there are 2 administrator accounts in windows. The one you can make, and the other. Dont remender how to acess. One way is you type something in your command window. Google it.

A locked BATCH file??!?  I've been working on these machines for longer than many of you have been alive and I've never seen that.

pshaw, I'll run verify when I get a round toit [gratuitous ancient game reference] but so far 2.3.3 is working fine.
