Conquest or Liberation

Ah, you know how it is. A neighbor loses a planet to a common enemy and you swoop in and take it. Except the original owner (whom you have no wish to go to war with) still has a starbase and/or a shipyard in your new system. A chance to trade for or purchase the bases and shipyards would be great.

A feature that may be cool in such an event as mentioned above is the concept of "Liberation", i.e., capturing a planet and having a choice for ideology points to either return it to the founding civilization, offer it back for a price or ruthless annexation.

Oh, this sounds awesome! I did this in Civ 6 with the suzerain states i was buddies with. Liked the feature a lot. Please add, Stardock!

Maybe a system where, when you invade and win the planet Binary Toast from the Snathi, you get an Incoming Trade Request from Binary Toast's original owner, the Alterians, saying "Hey, that was mine! Can I have it back?" and from there you make the decision..

So if an alien race of robotic, metallic cylons take over earth and enslave us, we can tell the amoeba, intelligent slime-like species, "Thank you, intelligent slime-like amoeba life forms for liberating Earth."

This sounds like a cool idea but could get rather complex if a planet changes hands multiple times.

I could also see an abuse potential if your little buddy civ is getting beat up. You give them planet back for points, then let the big bad civ take it again. You take it back, give it to your buddy for more points, etc. Tough to abuse on a large map, but could be easy to do on a small.

Would still like to see this...at some point.

What points? Ideology? It shouldnt give any. Trade it back for credits or goods. If they have none, no trade and theyre gone. Trading back should only be possible if they still have a planet theyre on, if theyre not in the game anymore theyre wiped out and trading back should be impossible.

That's true. If they are still "alive", perhaps they could be allowed to offer a station or other planet as trade value, not just credits or goods

Works like a charm in Civ V, doesn't it?

Dunno, never played the Civ series. :-) Note to self, if I ever play Civ 5, abuse the 3 party war trick.

Do it with city states.   Mongolia takes a city state.  Negative warmonger diplomacy for him.  You go to war with Mongolia and liberate city state.  Everybody but Mongolia loves you.  City defenses are trashed, indefensible city, so just let Mongolia retake it.  Everybody hates Mongolia more.  Re-liberate.  Everybody loves you more.  Repeat.  Pretty soon everybody is at war with Mongolia.
