Captains Log thoughts

There's been some discussion of thew captains log recently, some people seem to want something they can just write notes in, some people want ti to autolog stuff you do.

Personally, I would like it to be both, I guess. Hopefully it will track things I do and conversations I have with aliens, so I can read over them again later. I would also like to be able to write whatever notes I want in there, but also to click on something on the starmap and have it auto-populate coordinates for that thing into the log. Click on a planet, and it will put in the system it's in and the galactic coordinate of it. Maybe even a picture? Dunno.

What would then be very cool is if I can go into the log at any point, and click on anything I have logged in there with coordinates ("x:y:z is where I found a ton of gold but didn't have cargo space for it", say) and then when I click on it in the log, it highlights it on the starmap for me.

Any thoughts from anyone else?

Hey bleybourne - I agree with your suggestions. I can see the content groups into three areas:

  1. Quest log - what we saw in the latest video, gives you a subtle nudge of what to do next.
  2. Conversation log - communiqué of important stuff from contact with aliens
  3. Personal log - essentially notepad, just throws in a game timestamp and starmap position on your entry.

Your example of recording down resource motherloads is exactly what many used to on paper in SC2. It could be difficult to achieve a clean UI if it is made extremely flexible to annotate any location at any time from the starmap. Restrict adding entries based on your current location would make it much easier. 

I can see areas 1 and 2 being very important in the game. Is 3 a core piece of functionality that the game needs? No. Will it round the game-play out so it feel more complete (and IMO more accessible)? Most definitely.

It gets even worse. You can get a virus in-game from the Trandals, and the popups start "randomly" appearing.
