Windows does not support 16 bit programs?!?

ASC is not compatible with this version of Windows. :)

Ok...this is new. I just finished my Steampunk skin for Xion. It installed without a problem. So making a few tweaks to the skin I found it would not update. Tried again and no luck. I thought it was my skin so I went back in and checked it from top to bottom, nothing wrong with it. I closed Xion and reopened it, no change. So I uninstalled Xion, ran Ccleaner, then reinstalled it. No problem with the install. To test it I clicked on a new Xion skin and it failed to install. Clicked on others, same thing. Ok...now I'm gettin' frustrated. Opened control panel and system restore but before I did that I opened settings, updates and security then update history. I found that the latest update on March 22 failed to install. Maybe the cause of Xion's problem?

Did system restore to before that update back to the 15th. That cured one problem but presented another. After restore, which took some time after restart to working screen, ten minutes, I noticed ASC's little bar I keep on the top right of my screen was missing. Ok...clicked on ASC from the taskbar and I get an error message saying that ASC is not compatible with this version of Windows. Windows does not support 16 bit programs. WTF!

Uninstalled ASC then went to my backup and reinstalled it. No problem. Then I clicked on Chrome to come here and rant after uploading my skin. Chrome refused to open. I have FF as a second browser and it came out with an error message that said XPcom something, I forgot the rest. It didn't open either. So I opened up ASC's uninstaller and took 'em both out, ran CCleaner again then reinstalled only Chrome.

Now I ask ya...how in the hell does a program that has been running flawlessly, before and after MBAM took it out, get converted to a 16 bit version of itself? I said a long time ago that weird shit happens to me with this stuff. This just proves the point.

I didn't think there were anymore 16 bit programs, not in this day and age, and I'm pretty sure that ASC isn't one of them.  I wouldn't bet my last tuppence on it, but me thinks Windows Update has something to do with it.

I got an urgent update a few days ago, and when my HP 2-in-1 rebooted I had no internet, no Firefox, no ASC and no Bluetooth keyboard. All were broken

It was all working before.  I was using Firefox and the keyboard just before the reboot, and the ASC bar was in the top right corner... and obviously I had internet cos I posted okay here before allowing the reboot.  I figured the obvious culprit was the damned update, so I did a system restore and got rid of it.

Thing is, I don't have automatic updates enabled, and it wasn't time for the 3.00am Scheduled Maintenance, So I'm wondering how I even got the damned thing to begin with.  To be totally honest, I am sick to the back teeth of MS breaking stuff with untried/untested updates.  MS might claim they're tested, but they're NOT tested anywhere near enough, with millions of users all making the same complaint... MS keeps breaking shit with very poorly released updates.

As for ASC not being compatible with "this version of Windows", I have to wonder just how many programs MS has done this to, with Speccy and Ccleaner having been targets in the past, and that was no accident.  Thing is, apart from power users and those more tech savvy and persistent, just how many regular users would just accept it and move on to seek MS alternatives?

Frankly, Microsoft's behaviour is abhorrent and intolerable. >:(

If you're running 64 bit Windows you can only run 64 bit and 32 bit programs.  I can't explain why it worked and then stopped however.

I'm beginning to believe MS really hasn't got a clue. I thought I might have to do another clean install...again. o_O

What are ASC and MBAM?

ASC stands for Advanced System Care, a multi-purpose cleaner and group of system tools.  I have the Pro version and find it to be very good  for all sorts of things, from cleaning to speeding up my system.

AS for MBAM, I'm not sure what that is, but it could be that Uvah is bragging again 'My Balls Are Massive'

 :-" ;P

Yeah, it comes down to that sometimes. I had to do a clean install after the Anniversary update completely borked my HP 2-in-1.  It wasn't the first time, however.  When MS forced Win 10 down my throat by downloading and installing it via Scheduled Maintenance, I kept getting freeze-ups and non-responsive functions, hence a clean install because I believe that updating over a previous OS is the wrong approach and can cause a host of issues.

Even more wrong, and just as frustrating, is the manner in which updates are forced upon users without question.  In many cases, some of those updates are unnecessary and unwanted, yet MS keeps pushing them regardless.  I don't even have automatic updates enabled, yet I keep getting them once a month, including ones I'd hidden because they break things, via Scheduled Maintenance.

This idea of a continually updated OS is completely stupid and its architect should be shot.  What it means is that users are in a constant state of flux when it comes to the OS, with things constantly changing and often feching things up.  Security patches, once they've been tested for the majority of potential issues, well that's one thing when required, but to be constantly altering the basic structure of the OS to either add or remove features is completely stupid.

Yes, some people experienced a few issues after Service Pack updates, but it was by far the better way to do things.  At least that way the issues were confined to a specific time and could be worked on more easily, but this updating stuff on the run spreads the issues from dinner time to breakfast... or as we say here in Oz, from arsehole to breakfast.  In either event, it is stupid and infuriating when MS keeps breaking shit with its insistence to do things this way.

Okay, rant off... for now.  I say for now cos MS is bound to cock things up again and again... and again.
