Every time I open DeskScapes 8 Configuration it stops working within seconds

While I was typing out my post, I tough of a solution.  I deleted all of the videos within the folders that had been selected by DeskScapes 8.  This seems to be the root of my problem.  I decided to post this anyway in hopes that it will help others with the same problem.

Good luck,

Nathan

I believe it was caused by a Windows update.

I was able to get it back going by uninstalling the Microsoft Windows KB4013429 update that installed on 3/14/17.

Microsoft have yet again released a broken update for Windows 10.

This one appears to cause any application which tries to play a Mpeg2 file to crash.

Other file formats would be ok as the issue is in the MPEG2 decoder.

I believe a considerable number of other video apps have been broken by this and Microsoft are hopefully working on fixing this mess of their own making.

Two solutions are 1) roll back the update or 2) Use a tool to set the MS MPEG2 / DVD decoders to be disabled.

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/codec-tweak-tool lets you disable them via the MS Codec tweaks button (bottom right corner)

Please note that any mpeg2 video thumbnail queries also cause it to crash so if you have a single MPEG2 based video (but not dream file as I think those have their own thumbnails) then the Deskscapes config will crash out when it populates the thumbnail list.

I don't see that update but I'm having the same problem.

Microsoft have now acknowledged the problem under known issues : https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4013429/windows-10-update-kb4013429

My issue was fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling deskscapes.  That might work even if you have the bad MS patch since the install will supersede it.

That will do nothing for the bad MS patch as the MS patch patched an OS file that DeskScapes would not replace.

Has MS created a fix for this?  Even though I don't see the particular patch listed I may just be not finding out.  The only way I can change dreams now is to first make a static image as my desktop background, then choose a dream from the dream files or the configuration program.  If a dream is already running the program crashes.  Also, new dreams downloaded since the problem first occured don't work.  They don't appear in the list of dreams within the program and can't be double-clicked.
