reinstall windows 7 done

now help please

just reinstalled win 7 home professional.  Now windows 7  doesn't recognize my HDMI monitor, and other items.  I thought win 7 was plug n play - auto detect hardware and cue user to get drivers, yada. After reinstall sys not recognize yada.  Spent about 6 hours on web sites, googling/binging, yada.  Lost I am.  I reinstalled this exact system several years ago with zero problems.  Think I did exact same thing.  Result different.  Umm.

Cause (this time).  I allowed nvdia to update driver THEY selected as appropriate upgrade.  Their process included creating a restore point. (I had several already saved.)  All seemed fine.  When I powered up, next day - no dice.  Win auto fix fail, tried all choices, none work.  F-8 safe mode boot from win disk work - but not offer any fixes.  And No restore point exists!  Auto fix said bad driver.  (looks like Nvdia did it.)

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

Intel Core i7 960 @ 3.20GHz
Bloomfield 45nm Technology

How do I get correct drivers for these?  How I get win7 to recognize my non PnP monitor, graphics card, MB etc.    Tried several programs from major geeks.  They were cons to get me to buy software.  Say free download (but afterwards, must register to actually use, must purchase to register - NOT stated upfront.  Hate sleezware.   My backup/sys restore  image on DVD is 'missing.'  Appreciate simplified help in fixing this.  Future?take away?  I will keep 2 or 3 sys restore images on DVD.  Again, thank you.

Go directly to the developer or manufacturer websites to get the drivers.

Always good advice, especially when Microsoft/Windows versions have been known to cause issues.

Another thing you could try is a repair install of Windows using the Win 7 disc.  I have no idea why or how it happens, but sometimes Windows doesn't install completely and/or correctly, thus requiring a repair install to correct the issues.  Once you have done this, try again to install the graphics drivers, but only those downloaded directly from Nvidia.

Another thing you could try if there are missing or corrupt Windows files is sfc /scannow, which should repair or replace them if required

By rights Windows 7 should recognise your monitor, and hopefully it shows up after the repair install, but if not, some monitors come with an installation disc and you could try/look into that to resolve the issue.

Hopefully this helps, Elana.  Best of luck with it. :) |-)

This does fix many problems.

Try downloading, installing and using SlimDrivers, it will definitely help, and it's free.

Slim drivers did well.  :)   i was careful, but slim-cleaners installed as well.  Whats your take on slim cleaners?  Lightstar -you are a star!

Slim Cleaner is not as good as Wise Registry Cleaner, and it is free also. I also recommend Wise Uninstaller, another excellent free product.
