The Sin of The Force Awakens

When talking about 15 minute challenge for Star Control: Origins and looking into all release info of the game, I got a bit worried.

It looks like game would repeat same mistakes as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, rehashing the same plot in slightly different form, making it less impactful for true fans of the series.

Precursior modular ship = Earthling modular ship with precursor weapon

Finding Fwiffo on "non-planet" to jump start the story = fiding Tywom on "non-planet" for the same reason

Early encounter with menacing Ur-Quan (probe) = Early encounter with menacing Scryve (according to reveal teaser)

Create new alliance of free stars to combat larger then world threat = create another alliance for the same reason

Ur-Quan vs Korh-Ah duality = surprisingly similar ship frame of Scryve and Xraki warships

See the pattern? Now things may not be as they are, but they are so many similarities. Also SC2 did it better, making doing almost the same thing less great then it should be.

Anyway, I hope I'm wrong and that there is some twist, or misdirection by devs on what is shown to us, that makes SC:O story points better. Time will tell.

.

.

On unrelated note, if Xraki aliens are that first thing shown in the July update, they would need huge redesign. They currently looks like something strait out of Quake 1, with some sharpening filter from old MAME emulator to look higher resolution like. Really ugly in artistic sense.

I mean, it's not a sequel, and since Stardock does not have access to the original aliens, this is a good compromise so that we have a solid base for future expansions and sequels that still feels similar in scope and tone. At least that's my opinion.

But is it? Retelling almost same story does not have same impact as it had first time. In fact it makes it more flawed in my eyes.

Hopefully I'm wrong. We will see.

The opening may be similar, but there isn't anything that says that the game will be a clone of the SC2 storyline. Some indications of the Xraki having a fusion of Dan'Nath and Scryve ship tech indicates that. (Though it has been said that this is causing some trouble in SuperMelee since it is a huge spoiler. Expect changes.)

Also, there is a strong chance that the game's opening will be rewritten. Brad was not satisfied with how cliche the first hour played out.

Edit: And as for rehashing being a "sin", that "sin" was worth 2 billion. So.... Is it a sin or a clear path to revenue?

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't know if I'm allowed to repeat anything Brad may or may not have said (even though you're clearly also a founder) but, uh, while trying to keep things close to my chest just in case - you wont have to worry about several of the things you're worrying about.

But... it's a reboot!

Remake: Same but improved

Reboot: Similar and Improved

I was in the today's Skype chat.

So I know about new changes to make start more *impactful*. Hope restored. :D

I am pretty sure that Rea is going to turn out to be a Sith Lord, or at least some type of evil Jedi.  I don't base this on the story or hints at all, just on her look, body language and facial expressions.  It seems pretty obvious that she was cast to be an evil character based on all of that.  She's great for it, too, I love her.
