January 2017 preliminaries

Working on the January update.  Lots to talk about.

Question:

On a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is totally sanitized version (i.e. marketing friendly) and 1 = you get to hear arguments over which lighting model or details on cmake where do you guys fall on wanting to know stuff?

Don't just answer for yourself.  Answer based on what you think is best for the game.

Remember: Just because you might want to know the greatest depths, imagine how some people who have never been through a game project might react to seeing the sausage factory for what it is.

A couple months ago, for instance, there was an article about how Star Citizen is switching engines and people freaked out when in fact, it's common (we're not switching engines btw, it's just an example).

There was a lot of discussion here whether to let you guys know about our internal debates on Super Melee for example.

So again, what level of detail do you think is best for the game knowing it's going out only to Founders?

So we're not going to go into talks about how to align data structures to better align with the CPU cache pipeline?

I'm good with this level, and would enjoy it immensely, however I think that the 3-4 range makes sense.

Frogboy - As with most things as a general rule going the middle road (5) is a great starting point with more detail when the Stardock team deems necessary.

Are you kidding me?

Why do you think I became founder in the first place??

Every piece of data is relevant to me so I would say an easy 10.

Plus I'm the VP R&D of a startup company (not gaming related), so the dev process and the tech decisions are very interesting.

5-6 for me. As a Founder, I'm impressed at the level of openness being offered and have the opportunity to read it all (or not) based on my free time and interest.

Once you get past a 5 or 6, I bet you'd be talking about things most of us wouldn't understand as industry outsiders. At that point, for me, it's just wasted effort. Things about debates and decision-making processes I can enjoy; details on cmake not so much.

Thanks again!

I think you got the scale backwards

4-5 for me, I like me some education.  Also, I like the music in the January pack.

I totally agree with this    :star:

I like the content and comment given to date. If that's a 3-4, then 3-4 is good enough for me.

Thanks!

"1"  would love to hear everything.  :)

Hearing the arguments, helps us understand what was already covered in your design process.  And allows feedback from the community to agree or disagree with the decisions if it is still up for debate.

Hmmm.  I was going to say 3-4, but then I read that most everyone already said that.  Now I want to be original, and say 3.5.

In all seriousness, it's cool to see a consensus! I do want to know more than the average bear about what is going on because I'm a founder, and I paid you a good deal of disposable income to be a part of this project.

As for caching your pipline, I hear pipelines are getting approved faster these days!  :P

For me personally, 1-3. But that's only because I'm in software industry, so I'm curious how other teams handle their work.

I've liked discussion about CPU core utilization, engine, (lack of) tools used, engineer distribution between project, new shadow technics, shadowing or small planets, etc... So keep that stuff coming.

2-3

A "3" is probably good enough.

Personally I'm keen to hear as much as possible (since I'm a programmer and this kind of thing can be interesting to me).

I'm curious as hell about everything star control but please keep it as much as not to delay the game progress itself. Maybe as others suggest somewhere between 3 and 5

2-3 for me. As a software designer, I'm curious about what gets factored into the various decisions behind a game.

A little late, but I'd go with a 2 or 3.
