[a]listdaily Interview with Brad Wardell on Star Control: Origins

starcontrol_UI_melee2-640x360[a]listdaily has an interview up with Stardock CEO Brad Wardell on the upcoming Star Control: Origins!

"What attracted you to the Star Control franchise?

Star Control II was my favorite game of all time. When Accolade went out of business, Infogrames picked it up, and when that went out business, Atari got it. When Atari declared bankruptcy, we picked up the publishing rights to Star Control I, II and III so we could create a home for the existing trilogy. What we want is a space adventure game. I like Space Rangers and a few other games that touched that genre, but nothing scratches that itch like Star Control does. You go out, meet a bunch of aliens, have cool battles, explore planets and build up."

Good interview, just not 100% happy with the mario kart style planet scouting, it's like you are forced to follow a certain path where as i'd like to explore the planet on my own time and go my own way, and it's too much first person view, it should be more like a dune or c&c rts game which immerse you into the whole reality of the planet, i remember a scene from command & conquer tiberian sun, where the mission was to secure a ship that went down, the atmosphere was electrifying, it was so immersive as the dark yellow atmosphere loomed with lightning all over the place....

Imagine what you could do today, enhance the lightning ! earthquake tornado effects, it would be so awesome.

My only beef with it is that it looks (but I can't be sure until I play the thing, obviously) like it would be hard to know that you had traversed the entire planet and not missed anything. I hate the idea that I may have just not spotted something on the surface because I zipped around but didn't happen to go past the one important part, because of the curve of the planet meaning you can't see very far in the distance, and the terrain meaning you have a constrained path.

I kind of think the Mario kart mineral scouting looks cool.

but I do understand the concerns.

I think the easiest way around that for pleasing everyone, would be a toggle switch for it.

like 1) 1st person 3d view (default settings for origins)

2)layout map view (SC2 settings)

3)Driver seat view ( for your car racing fans)

that would solve any complaints, imo.

A top down version like an rts game would be more immersive, which in turn would make it feel like 2 types of games many already love in one,  the effects you could create would work so well with a top down setting, dust devils, rain, storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcano's depending on the type of planet.

There's something just uniquely captivating about a top down view, especially for a game such as star control. you are not put on rails to sit and steer left or right at whatever is coming, and the planet does not feel like a small round sized object, it's not nice to feel limited in a game that is all about unlimited exploration. The feeling of freedom, i'm not saying there has to be endless of space on a planet's surface, however it must feel big like a normal rts game map, and explorable at your own discretion after asessing the planet's data to send down the lander.

Scouting the planets on SC2 was the only weak spot of the game, I feel.

I really hope there's going to be alot of stuff to do when going to scout a planet.
I don't care about the view but the actual content on the planet.

stuff like : setting base camps, mining posts, meeting alients, getting new data for quests or side quests.

They've been working on this game for a long time & it comes out this year.

Shouldn't we be hearing more public info on this game by now?

maybe not even game details so much, but the planned platforms and expected release date or something?

They should NOT be rushed, give them their space, they need to do this game right, if i had my way, i'd tell them to take at least 2 years but i would be more at ease for a release after 3 years. I don't know how many people is on board, what the budget and schedules is, i know they are putting a lot of resources into it, probably most everyone at Stardock. Frogboy and Brad touched on the subject.

What i DO know for certain is, this is a big game that needs to be done right, and to do it right WILL take time, let's give them that time to make this a true Star Control Successor.

Great interview. I like the multiverse concept, and am interested in seeing what's in there. It was specifically said that the "main cast" would be all new aliens, but it looks like there could be secondary/tirtiary characters from more familiar races. I know it is a bias opinion, but I'd be hit with some nostalgia at seeing some of the races from SCII pop up in whatever forms. I also like that they're not trying to compete with Mass Effect, I think that point is very important, as they're keeping it Star Control in terms of feel and format.
