Introductions

Hello!

I am Patrick Shaw and I recently joined the Star Control team as a producer.  I thought I'd drop by and introduce myself before the holiday.  I've been working at Stardock for a little over a year now on GalCiv3, Escalation, and Political Machine.  But my industry experience goes back almost 18 years.

Let's start off with some ice-breakers:

What the heck is a "producer"?|
My job is to make sure that everyone on the team is successful and that the project meets its milestones.  This means lots of meetings, task prioritization, spreadsheets, and cheerleading the team.  I also listen to feedback from our players.

Do you code?
I have done some coding on other projects but not on Star Control. Our talented developers are working on some really exciting tech that we'd like to share with you someday (sorry not today!).

What's your favorite part of Star Control:Origins so far?
Tough choice!  I would say it's between the story portion so far and the planetary exploration. I am really excited to see all of the systems coming together.

What's your greatest weakness?
I am horrible at typing which is kinda of important skill for a producer.  Not sure where I would be without spellcheck and Grammarly.

Feel free to ask me any questions.  I can't answer everything yet, but I'll be reading through forums and respond when I can (maybe a little slow over the holiday!).    However, it's easy for me to miss something, so feel free to PM me or send me an email at [email protected] .

As a developer I can confidently say that you can increase productivity by excluding the devs from meetings 99% of the time. :D

We're not interested in the tech. We're interested in the promised development process which we paid for and get subatomic snippets of. Sorry for being blunt, but the founder's program isn't living up to the promise in my eyes.

One of my goals for the New Year is to get you all more involved with the process.

Welcome.  As I'm sure you can tell there are a lot of people who care a lot about getting a serious contender for one of the greatest games of all time.  It's difficult to live up to that, and there are a lot of ideas on what elements are needed to accomplish it.  But I genuinely hope that you believe it is possible to achieve, and that you have a goal to reach it.  That doesn't mean the game can't possibly fall short of "greatest" and still be good, but I think people far too often assume they shouldn't even try for the best, and I've not really gotten a feeling about what Stardock feels about SCO in that regard.

As producer, I simultaneously envy and don't envy your position, but I appreciate you showing your face on the boards.  I look forward to the increase in communications over the coming months.

"We". Please, Hunam, speak for yourself. I'm interested in everything.

Thanks for the introduction, Patrick.

I'd welcome some regular interaction with Stardock in more of an officially moderated capacity. Brad's updates are great, but it will nice to have another voice providing some community interaction on a more regular basis.

Hahaha! I find that pretty funny - you came up with a question, posed it to yourself, and then answered with "tough choice"! Wouldn't it have been easier, since you're making the questions anyway, to ask what your TWO favorite parts of SC:O are so far?! Hah!!! Love it.

Anyhoo - you're stepping into a minefield, my friend, there's several... disgruntled people on here already. Not me, I'm the resident nice guy who gets picked on constantly, lol... but just be ready for several mouthfuls whenever you pop in!

If I can say though, if you as producer, could work to trickle-reveal things throughout the month, it would create a LOT more liveliness in this forum! We all pop on the last day of the month, discuss for 2-7 days and then......... dead zone. Let's spice it up!

I'm a developer too (well, actually a technical consultant) but I don't really work well when I'm just used as a coding monkey without any personal interaction :).

Hi Patrick! I'm a bit of a lurker on here but excited for the game and looking forward to some new teaser (or real) content here in the new year. I was a bit dubious about pre-ordering the game, since we have had some issues I'll say in the last couple years with pre-orders for gaming in general, but for me it helps that other Stardock games are solid and this seems right up Stardock's alley.

Maybe I missed it in the forums, but what is the schedule for the game at right now? Also, have you (and/or the team) played the original star control games? Finally have you guys talked with Fred and Paul and the original team at all, even in just a friendly conversation about the game? I wonder what they think of a new game, if anything.

Anyway, thanks and good luck in the new year.

Short answer to all your questions is yes, the team is thoroughly familiar with the franchise and they've had conversations with Paul and Fred. They haven't publicly acknowledged the transition of the franchise to Stardock yet, but I'm sure that in time they'll come forward with their thoughts as Stardock's publicity of the new titles increases. We're all hoping that Paul and Fred can be involved someday and in some way, of course, but their existing relationship with Activision basically prevents them from directly contributing in an official capacity.

Stardock has a lot of weight on their shoulders, but they are doing their best to honor the wishes of Paul and Fred. Check out Brad Wardell's monthly updates in the Founder Vault for the official word on what's been going on.

I appreciate your candor, I hope you can appreciate it as well as you will get more than you may want. I'm glad you will take direct messaging. At the point in which I can't tolerate some of the insufferable members of this crowd again, I will send my solicited input directly to you. Until then I will post it on my monthly update feedback posts. I would say welcome, but this is your house, So I say "hey".

Hey Patrick,

If you don't answer our questions you won't get any more from us :). We have better things to do with our time ;)

Thanks for the introduction.  I personally enjoy getting to see who's working on projects (especially being a project manager myself in a different field)

Welcome Sir, look forward to hearing your thoughts as we work closer and get more involved.

^ Good luck with that.

Isn't it funny? Pshaw comes on here on the 21st, saying he'll be our new, active forum liaison - posts until the 27th... and then? Utter silence for a month LOL... I mean, just GONE. I haven't been on here for a month either, but I did think I'd come back at the end of the month for the vault update, and he'd be all OVER these forums. But, no. Silence! What happened there?

I'd cut him some slack. The year is still new.

I guarantee that we will start hearing more from the team in a few days.
