Alien speech fonts. Assigned them to ships. xD

Since not all aliens were revealed and I had the urge to personify them with fonts, I just took the sucky quality ships pic, used the best of my imagination and assigned some cool fonts to them.

I might be totally wrong in my descriptions and associations, don't judge too harshly. :P

1 - Extremely advanced, mastered the power of nuclear fusion = font is clean, concise, perfect.

1 - Ancient, been everywhere = olden looking font with a touch of alien'ness.

2 - My favorite race so far (Mukay): Smart, collected, benevolent = font is exquisite, elegant, pure.

2 - Another variant of "fish" font (I hope they aren't offended xD).

3 - Avant-garde, cutting edge dark matter tech, more digital than analog = hi-tech, superb digital font.

3 - A bit more alien and more analog/organic variant.

4 - Fat barrel guys = font reflects that.

4 - Curvy + straight shaped ship = this font reflects that too and too cool looking not to include .

5 - Well these are Hunams = simple, but ornate font for future hunamity.

5 - More classy variant.

6 - Scryve "the bad mofos of space" = stern, ominous, nod to Starcraft

6 - this variant is austere, relentless, unemotional (probably would get the game banned in Germany and couple of other countries too)

7 - Good guys Tywom/Caterpillars/Worms = loopy font reflects that.

7 - Another variant to match our fat inter-vertebrate neighbors.

8 - Space hobos, low tech, scavangers = they use stencil and spray paint to write shit.

8 - And when they need to send an email, they just slap some bulb letters & numbers yanked out of an ancient derelict ship on an outdated PCB, run Outlook and call it a day.

9 - Prime digital beings, multi part ship = multi part, streamlined, extrinsic font.

9 - Another, softer variant.

10 - Low tech, predominantly organic, evil, putrid = font reflects that.

10 - Marauders, space pirates, raiders = font reflects that.

11 - Archaic, enigmatic, religious = font reflects that.

11 - Another variant of cryptic font.

12 - Is this "You can trust him"? Small ship = small neat font. Enjoy.

12 - Another a bit more funky variant for little guys.

13 - Exotic race in eccentric ship with glass sphere cockpit gets the best font ever. And it's readable too! I absolutely love that font.

13 - Two other, simpler variants if the first one is too off the wall.

14 - These guys are ultimate evil. Reapers of Star Control. They get this hex'y, stick'y, a-la Predator font that somewhat matches ship lines.

14 - Less readable variant.

Disclaimer: If Stardock ends up using any of this or similar - I wasn't here and I don't know who made this post. ;)

This is a cute exercise and makes me wonder how Stardock plans on incorporating custom font styles for community content.

My total shot in the dark guess would actually be that they'll include a font design feature with the mod tools. Don't know if that would be any harder or easier than just supporting standard font libraries, although such liberty could pose major issues if the typefaces aren't properly licensed for use.

@Vaelzad/Frogboy: can you weigh in on how content creators will incorporate fonts? Will typefaces have to be drawn from scratch or can we use [presumably] open source fonts like these that are ready to be plugged in?

^ Yes! I don't want all the fonts to be easily readable. Make some feel truly alien, like #13.

IBNobody - this is incredibly interesting, and one of the best ideas you've contributed so far. It's shocking how easily I read that paragraph, and I get the chills just thinking about Stardock incoporating a truly alien race that our translation software just goes haywire when we connect. Goddamn, son, marvelous.

Hunam - You've just convinced me, 100%, about the importance of a special, funky font for every single alien race in the game. At first? I thought to myself, nahhhh... I don't really care much about fonts. It was a cool trick in SCII, but not something that must absolutely carry over. I no longer feel that way. Races need different fonts because it gives them personality beyond what happens with their voice, or their bodies on screen. It truly goes that extra step.

I know neither of you care, but +fake internet points for your both.

Provided that we don't make many changes to the font system you should be able to use open source fonts or any fonts you create by hand. We won't be providing any font creation tools for modding as there are plenty of other tools out there that let you create fonts that the engine can use.

....... but will YOU be creating fonts from scratch for all aliens?

I'd pay another $25 for my favorite font (#13) to be in the game. :P

14a, on the other hand, I can't read at all! Your #13 is fun, though!

Going to bump this thread since there was a request in the update for fonts. We don't need another thread. :P

Why yes, I do pay for each thread. Every extra post makes my soul die a little.

(But seriously... It's not because we are being mean. There are some serious problems with the forum software and how posts are handled. Have you ever seen this many stickied posts on a forum? It used to be even worse!)
