Founders Edition Price And Budget

Note this is NOT a complaint about the price just to get that out of the way.

But what I did notice is that the founders edition will be priced at $35 USD. I think that's a pretty good price point.

I did have a question though about that price point and the budget of the game. In one of the previous Founder posts they talked about how this was Stardock's biggest budget game to date, that was larger than several other games combines (i'm paraphrasing but so don't quote me on that one). The details aside, the impression I got that the budget for this game was pretty big and that correspondingly means higher risk.

I guess given that very large budget, how do you feel the existing price point is going to work with regards to the budget. Also do you anticipate the price of the 'base' game going up before release or Early Access?

Also how do consoles sales fit into your budget/sales projections? I understand you probably can't give specifics but I'd still be interested in any kind of 10,000 mile high super ultra high level thoughts on it.

Just making an educated guess, but I'd say both these prices are discounted against whatever the final selling price will be.

They've already established that the amount of content we're given access to in the Lifetime Edition will outweigh the $100 cost over time because new expansions should ultimately end up adding to more than that amount. If that's the case, I'd guess the retail version could be more like $40-$50 with new DLC being in the $10-$30 range, depending on how big and how often it's released.

Budget was stated to be $5mil - they only need like 100,000 sales to make the budget back.

That said, I don't think the $35 price point will stay. It'll go up to $49.99, methinks. +DLC

Although, I really want Stardock to be careful - because if you've been reading comments on all the sites reporting on Star Control Origins after the floodgates opened today, there's MANY people who have been turned off by Stardock's expansions and DLCs in the past.

going by gal civ III and Offworld Trading Company DLC prices, I think we can expect the following prices for DLC: $4.99 for non-expansion DLC, $9.99 OST, $19.99 expansions.  If memory serves, there were 5 DLC for gal civ III in the 1st year followed by Mercenaries (expansion) and the roadmap I think said 4 DLC for 2016, of which 1 is to be released.  Then there's the "launch parts"/"registration" DLC for gal civ III that were free and I don't think counted in the amount.  I don't think either the soundtrack counted or real mars DLC for Offworld Trading Company counted since they were available at launch for no charge to early access holders as well as elite founder's.  Anyway to make it to $99.99 from $35.99, you need 2 expansions and 5 DLC to break even.  Factor in the soundtrack will probably be $9.99 by itself and you can make that 3 DLC @ $4.99.

As for price point, I think just based on the kind of game this is I'd expect to see it as 39.99 on PC MAX, possibly cheaper on console. Even if it's huge, totally fully featured, it just seems like not the kind of AAA game that could command 60.

I'd hope the angle is to go for maximum amount of sales/players (especially considering most people will be buying digital, so less "printing" costs?) vs. a lot on the first buy. I think a lot of people are feeling burned by No Man's Sky and its price point and while this will ideally be infinitely better, if they had priced it less I think it would have had a more favorable reception in the exact state it already was on launch.
