Prelude to September Founders Diary

Greetings!

Getting ready to work on the September diary.  There will be some particularly cool assets with it as the game starts to become...well...a game.

A few things the team wanted me to relay to you guys as there has been quite a bit of concern regarding how people are taking some of our prototype screenshots:

  1. When we share screenshots or other visuals with you, not only are these not the final screenshots but they are not even what we would ever consider showing to the public.  Star Control is still over a year away from release so what you are seeing is very internal stuff.
  2. A lot of the iteration on game play will be coming from you guys playing it before the public sees it. That is, I hope, why you signed on. To make sure Star Control was done right.   For instance, Super Melee, the public won't even get to see Super Melee until you guys have had a chance to critique it because we may make substantial changes to how it plays based on your feedback.  Lots of ideas look good: on paper.
  3. A lot of the rendering tech isn't in yet and won't be in for many many months.  That means the visual elements won't look very good for a long time.

Honestly, I have enjoyed what I have seen. It appears most of what we have seen are place markers for the game and something for the game engine to work with. I'm stoked either way. I would say no matter what you put out and its' current state, there will be criticism and praise. That what you have us here for. At least you will have an idea of the direction the founders are looking at. Thanks for sharing the devs point of view, I appreciate everything you share, even if I have differentiating opinions on it.

 O:)

FYI, Brad... Sharing isn't working right on that link...

Access requested. XD

Could you just post a side-by-side screenshot of now vs then? We don't really need special access to Google drive for this.

Link? What link? And what's this "access requested"? Am I missing something? Or are you guys yankin' me?

That deescalated quickly...

Dang it! Can someone tell me about what this Google Drive thing is?? Did I miss it? Was it a link previously on here? My rabid hunger for blo-... er... Star Control news is overwhelming me right now!

Brad was trying to post some old gameplay testing images of Ashes of the Singularity as an example of how primitive it looked in the early stages of development but the link required a login to view. Maybe he'll show it to us later...

The screenshot comparisons for Ashes were awesome. Thanks for sharing them! I know what to expect now.

What link? I can't find anything.

^ He's fudging with y'all. There was never a screenshot.

I was going to try to RickRoll y'all, but I was being nice.

Yea hang on, let me go put it on dropbox.

Honestly, Star Control looks far further along than this was, especially if this is at the same time frame.

Right now, we are looking at a February 2018 release.  I'll be discussing the challenges we are facing in depth in the upcoming diary.

The main thing the team asked me to convey: We are assuming you guys want to know the inside story of how Star Control is being made.  Who the people are. The problems we run into. The mistakes we make as well as the cool new things we are doing.

Absolutely. Honestly, I never thought a game of such scope could make it out in 2017. So please, I've waited my whole life since I was 12 - take the time and make it so damn good that at 68, I'll still be talking about it.

... The mistakes we make as well as the cool new things we are doing.
I was just opining on this in another thread with the hope that some thought is being given to not just remaking what we already know and expect, but genuinely innovating and surprising people by incorporating new dynamics, mini games, alternate play modes, or other concepts nobody may even be anticipating. Have a feeling this is going on already, but it's too early to discuss.

SC2 was a blend of various genres and it would be awesome if that idea could be carried forward into modernity. I can't tell Stardock how to do it (although we spend a lot of time here trying) but I hope it's being given a lot of thought and consideration.

Hey Brad. I know you have your whole Stardock family hard at it with SK Rivals just out, more work going into Offworld, big expansions for GalCiv 3 and Ashes, plus your unannounced projects, and then this wee little old Star Control reboot but I'm all for hearing more about the team and the design processes you are running through. I totally get this games is still early stage so course corrections are to be expected. And this is why I signed on as a founder. Thanks for all the feedback to date and the whole teams hard work.
