Planets are more than just a name

Planet naming details.

Greetings, Lifetime Founder!

Thank you for your support of Star Control. The time for you to make your mark on the universe has arrived - that's right, it's time to name a planet!

In order to submit, you must be logged in with the Stardock account that you purchased the Founder's Lifetime Edition with.

While we encourage silly and wild names (this is Star Control, after all), we ask that you please use your best judgment when submitting. We will deny any submissions containing offensive or inappropriate content, as well as submissions containing copyrighted or trademarked material.

Submissions end on October 14, 2016. Please see the "Name a Planet" page for all official rules and details. We're looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

1. Only ONE entry per user. You may change your entry once it has been submitted, but it will need to be re-approved.

2. Any inappropriate, trademarked, or copyrighted content will result in the entire entry being rejected.

3. If your entry is rejected, you may re-submit your entry. However, Stardock reserves the right to lock out any user who abuses this system or who submits deliberately offensive content.

4. Planet names are limited to 16 letters/numbers/spaces (no punctuation, please), and will be converted to title case in-game (only first letter capitalized).

5. Numbers and punctuation are acceptable in first, last, or screen names.

Hmm Awesome! But I have a few questions to ask and suggestions to make.

My request to the developers is thus. I know we get to name planets. But past that?... Let's say the name I chose is Volcana, which is (obviously) supposed to be a name for a volcanic world (at least in my mind). Then the game comes out. I go and find my planet, and it turns out that it was algorithmically assigned to an ice world.

Is there any way that as well as naming planets, we get a few options as well? Like "check box of desired planet type here" or "click here if you want there to be life forms on your planet"? That would be very cool, as well as providing a method to add context to planet names like Voltron (weather hazard world) or Radon (radioactive hazards).

Also, how are planets being generated/named? And will founder planets be of a significant importance, or will they be the equivalent of finding a random small moon with the sign "The ur-quan master was here?"

I realize that due to developmental issues, this may not be possible. But even if the planet types and such were only taken as suggestions, it would make the whole process a lot more engaging and satisfying for founders both before, and after the game's development.

So, wadda you guys think?

And yes, I did post this earlier on a forum. But since no one was able to see/answer my questions due to nearly immediate unrelated posts, I decided to make it a discussion topic.

*forum. FTFY

I'd want my lush green Earth-like planet to be inhabited by a non-space-faring robotic race that doesn't know how they came to existence.  B)

I don't think anything beside the planet name is happening though.

I too echo the OPs questions.  I'd love to have some small say in what my world is like, since I named it after my newborn.  Don't want him stuck with a hell-planet or something.  :)

"TOM WAS HERE" needs to be a gas giant. I don't want to even consider landing on it.

^ A black hole beyond the accessible edge of the local star cluster with no underlying code for activation - NMS style.

Maybe they will be all randomized (except plot planets)

I would also really like to have some say in the type of planet.

Even with a procedurally generated space, you can enter hard coded variables that have to be used. It could take some time but, as a developer myself, I would spend a day or two forcing it in if it would make a few hundred hardcore fans very happy.

This form dead? Any chance of getting a developer to respond?

No, they won't respond to this. It would tip us off to what they are going to do with the "planet" names.

This is an "Area 51" level of secrecy. If they tell you, the main plot of the game will be completely revealed and the game will literally become unplayable. $100 wasted.

Here is the current plan for the founder's planets.

The founder's planets are going to be scattered around the galaxy.

We are hooking up an achievement that you will be awarded once you have found them all.

Once we have the final galaxy in place, we are going to send you the location of your planet so you can find it.

It is up to you if you want to share that location with everyone else or keep your planet secret and not tell everyone where it is.

We are not sharing composition details of what we are doing with your planets at this time. I would really like for it to be a surprise for everyone when they go and visit their planet.

After all which is better, knowing what is inside all your presents during the holidays or opening up and getting surprised. :)

^ Picking what is inside is better.

On a sidenote, what is going to stop people (me) from datamining the universe files and discovering the locations of these planets?

I'm already committed to creating an anti-filler mod that deletes them, after all.

...have you ever celebrated christmas? And if so, what kind of kid got to pick what was inside of it?

Maybe they will be the Rainbow Worlds or have some artifact for finding them all.

You've known me for almost a year. Can't you tell I was a spoiled brat? :P

Besides. A 🐦 in the ✋ is worth two in the 🌳.

For some reason all of this reminded me of when I woke up before my parents one Christmas when I was 7 or 8, and they had put a "Green Machine" (which was like a 4-wheeled Big Wheel with a joint in the center so the body could flex in both directions) in the living room... and I ran it into the tree and knocked the x-m,as tree down onto myself!

Haha!

I prefer to be surprised but what i am really happy is that they will give us the coordinates!

i was worried i was never going to find my planet XD

It'd be better if we had clues in the game to find Our planets, but I understand that there's no time to make this happen.

yeah i'm happy to get them though, because i want to find it as quick as possible to take a screenshot to show my partner i named a planet after their nickname lol
