What NOT to do for Origins

List of possible grievances

How about a thread where we all sound off about what would be ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING to each of us, if Stardock did for Star Control: Origins. That might help guide Stardock and be as important as what we DO want in the game...

For example:

1. I will cry if there are a million incremental upgrades to your ship that don't really change anything - just improve it a bit. I've already said that before. But to add to that - I will STILL cry if these upgrades are just littered around the surface of a ton of planets with no backstory and no reasonable storyline for them being there. For example, if there's a new wing design on Planet A just sitting there. Then on planet B, there's a gun just sitting around, spinning icon, waiting for you to pick up. And on Planet C there's a new fuel tank lying on the planet's surface for you to suck up. And on Planet D there's a hull plate lying by a rock for no reason. And on Planet E...... etc. This isn't Diablo. I don't want a suit of armor and a new sword to pop out from a rock just so there's something to find. I can just see scanning a planet and there's always some energy signal directing you to pick up a new gun floating in the air. For no reason. They should be meaningful and special EVERY TIME. Like the first game.

Okay, now you go!

1st person perspective.  There is no such thing as "a first person shooter in space".  It is subject to the literal laws of Air Combat Maneuvering, only without the gravity to make it interesting.  Spinning in a circle gets boring by about the third time around.  I could, as could anyone else who knows ACM, barely break up and slightly alter that endless turning circle like nobody ever does with those games... with the emphasis on "barely".  Not enough to make it fun at all, and you'd still be in that circle most of the time.  It's unavoidable.  A 1st person "space fighter" game can only be as fun as the best version of the old Falcon series of flight sim that you can imagine.  I would love it, as would a small audience of others, but most people wouldn't be interested in "Falcon X: F-116 Falcon Star Fighter" that takes weeks just to learn how to fly if you've never played a serious flight sim before.

But, whatever you do... don't try a "fast and fun 1st person shooter in space" version because that does not exist.  Endless circle...

Leaving out local multiplayer. :P

I would really hate the game for using PG star names similar to NMS release version (Ex.: Unagaxunfune, Yipugaoansum, Bulganzhejiaxi) - I mean what? But I would love it if it used E3 version names. (Grafningard, Quidar, Achaia) - the ones that actually look like real life names and readable... We already have 88 recognized constellations. Use those names and either PG the rest with real life prefixes, roots, suffixes and endings or handcraft them. I can help for free.

This would break immersion like nothing else for me.

I've noticed a massive variety of minerals and critters in one of the screenshots. If any of them will be using the same icon or resource marker on the planet, I swear on my neighbor's cat I'll ... do somethin'...

...and that's why you don't try to make up names for entire fleets of alien ships.  Too many ships named Xcsylxth just start to read like a random jumble of letters really quickly.

Yes, IBNobody - we're alllll in agreement on that by now, lol. Anything else to add?!

Haha, Hunam, I'm glad you said it because I had to ACTIVELY restrain myself from mentioning NMS like 5x on the various things they lost me on. But you're soooooo right. To this day, I remember the Star Control II star names and reuse them every time I play a 4x game - whether it be CIV 5 or Galactic Civilizations or Stellaris or whatever. My Homeworld (or Capital) is named Sol and my first colony is usually Procyon. Then comes Delta Gorno, Eta Sextantis, Betelgeuse, Alpha Vulpeculae, Beta Camelopardalis, Alpha Chandrasekhar, etc.! So memorable, so well done. I got so sick of Segulnaopixandar Volucotioriae in NMS that just remembering those planets makes me cringe.

But question: What's E3 version names? E3 like the Electronic Entertainment Expo?

E3 demo version of NMS had different Star/Planet names composition. It also had a much better looking GUI.

Wow, NMS sure took a nose-dive away from greatness, eh?

THAT was the game i wanted

...

but i got a less polished and non-creativity version of Spore...

(WITH LESS ALIENS!)

I understand that their current development places no more emphasis on multi-ship combat for single-player; but I really hope they do not let that stop them from adding it eventually.

...

Also, please, do not just include an ability adjustment system for making our own ships. Full blown script system for complete custom concepts, please.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

You can be sure that I am readying my full assault once the SuperMelee demo hits and I have the basis to show that the game is not complete without having a buddy share the same screen.

Have they said that this is going to also be released on console?  It seems like a game that would be insane to not make on console, since it is inherently a gamepad game.  If they have already said they are making a console version than I would think same screen multiplayer with two gamepads would be a sure thing.

They have mentioned that console is a market they'd like to hit. I mean, I've never played the game with a gamepad, I've almost exclusively played with a joystick or a keyboard.

The squeaky wheel usually gets replaced because it's breaking down. :)

Don't use a joystick!  This was a HUGE subject of debate within the Subspace community for many years.  In the end, most agreed that gamepad and keyboard were "equal but different" in controlling this type of game.  Some of the top players were gamepad, a seemingly equal amount of the rest were keyboard.  All the even just "good" players could see and understand the different things you could do with one and not the other, and the other way around.  Different styles were drawn toward either one or the other.

The two things that there was never much debate about... Joystick sucks really bad, but not nearly as bad as a mouse.  Don't even provide mouse support for flight control, it's so bad that it simply being an option is a detriment to your game and leads players to believe that using that control method must be workable, when it is not.  If you think it is, meet me in a game with your mouse some time and we'll go over this in detail:-)

But Joystick is really bad too, don't use a joystick!

Actually, I only used a joystick because that's how my dad played back then. Of course, after I started using the keyboard, I was a bit faster, but he was a real monster with it. Admittedly, he used one of those REALLY expensive flight sticks back in the day, lots of precision, high sensitivity. Lots of fun.

And yet, the squeaky wheel is the only one getting a dev response in this thread... Hmm... Squeak Squeak Squeak?

While you're here, please tell us why local, single-screen multiplayer was dropped (or was never included) as a release feature.

I used to love the early flight sims like F15 Strike Eagle, F117 Stealth Fighter, and Falcon IV was the version that sticks in my memory for some reason.  Falcon was the best one, at least when I stopped playing them.  I haven't played a complex flight sim since back then, but I remember I used a "CH Flightstick" which was like one of the best joysticks you could get back then but would be a joke today, haha!

CH Products are still in business, and they still sell the Flightstick Pro. Legendary stick.

If they don't include the ability to play another races ships in melee!

It's kind of sad that I am getting veiled threats/hints/warnings/promises/hostility/whatever of violence (or banishment) for asking about the state of a feature.

You could just admit that the feature isn't there. Worst case is that you'll have to wade through tens of posts with people other than me (but mostly me) trying to convince you to put the feature back in.

What harm would it do?
