[Bug] Patch 1.82. To many Text String entries causes the game to Crash.

....Which is fine in a away, it means the mod is broken and needs updating. The issue I have is the game doesnt even say or list in the debug.err file why the game failed to load. It just closes after the initial splash screen. Which is not very helpfull when said mod has 200+ files in it...

Its my GST mod btw.

Edit:-

So I tracked this down to custom TechDefsText.xmls by process of elimination. I have nine in my Mod, one for each of my custom Star Trek races. I have moved these nine files to a new mod. In this mod I have split each xml into its own mod. Placed each one into the GalCiv3/Mods directory one by one untill the game crashed, it happened to the the Romulan file, great I thought, I found the bug!

I then removed all the other sub mods from the folder and left the Romulan file in there on its own, started the game and it booted! Arghh. Back to the process of elimination!

I start again by adding the sub mods one by one to the mod folder, Bang it crashes on the Tholians this time! So I think, Romulan and Tholian xmls must be conflicting, I remove all the mod bah Tholian and Romulan and guess what....it boots! Again back to the process of elimination!

I start again by adding the sub mods one by one to the mod folder, Bang it crashes on the Federation this time! So I think, Romulan, federation and Tholian xmls must be conflicting, I remove all the mod bah Tholian, Federation and Romulan and guess what....it boots! Again back to the process of elimination!

I start again by adding the sub mods one by one to the mod folder, Bang it crashes on the Borg this time! So I think, Borg, Romulan, Federation and Tholian xmls must be conflicting, I remove all the mod bah Tholian, Federation, Borg and Romulan and guess what....it boots! Again back to the process of elimination!

We can all see where this is going.........there is a pattern here!

I could carry this on and on and on but I wont, lets just say I have tried all sorts of combinations(for the last two and a half hrs) yet the game always crashes once I add the 9th faction file to the mod folder, does not matter which one, its always the 9th.

Now I have another faction the Maquis that also has a custom TechDefsText.xml, but it is based on the Pirate faction so only has a military branch. This does not effect the sequence, if I add this in, the game will crash when I add the 10th file regardless of which one it is.

Here is a link to the offending files! Try them out in what ever order you want and you will see what I mean!

So we need to get the Devs/Stardock to increase the number of Tech Trees/Factions that a player can have/create in a game correct?

In other words, at this time only 8+1 (pirates) tech trees (complete factions) can be in the game before the mod crashes it...Is this correct?

Vanilla + DLC + 8 Custom + Pirates, atleast this is what it seems to be, and, it is only the TechDefsText files that are causing issues. TBH I do not see why they would limit this deliberatly. Or even intended for this to have happened with 1.82.

How can we/YOU, get this in the Devs/Stardocks eye and see if they can fix it?

A small update, with my whole mod active it will only let me use 4 custom TechDefsText.xml's. Doesnt seem to matter which 4. it is also now counting the Maquis TechDefsText.xml in this count.

Edit:

Okay it does seem to matter, TholianTechDefs.xml doesnt want to play with more than two others(3 total). Which lead me to think that something is broken in it/them. Yet I can not see what or why this would be. Going by the changes made to the xml's by 1.82 you did not change any of the faction TechDefsText.xmls, just the generic one and added a bunch for the new campaign in the Altarian Prophecy DLC, all my custom ones are copies of the base games, with a few name changes here and there. Just seems very odd it all worked in 1.81 an not in 1.82.

Any chance of confirmation that it is a base game bug?

On a side note i could not spell confirmation, had to do a spell check on what i had typed, conformation, its acualy a word (factoid incoming):-

Conformation - any of the spatial arrangements which the atoms in a molecule may adopt and freely convert between, especially by rotation about individual single bonds.

Any update on this?

I think it is related to total number of string entries. I just added some new text string entries to ship components and starbase modules. I now have to remove 7 of my TechDefsText.xmls (was 6).

Yep it is definatly the total number of string entries. I just deleted all the campaign texts from my game directory and my mod boots up fine.

No update yet.  It's something we'll have to fix for the base game as we add more content to the game.

We a fix in for this back in September.  Are you still seeing this with a new game or from loading an old game?

Unfortunately, the OS doesn't matter.  Do you remember your ticket number for this issue?

Urm, I do not sorry.

The text files are here. Extract them to the Example Mod folder and you will see what I mean (hopefully).

My logs are here. (From the support tool)
