The universe is getting big...

How to add more new creatures without screwing up existing ones?

I think you've answered it yourself in the first sentence of the paragraph: UNIVERSE IS ... BIG.

Step one: Make the galactic map BIG. Like really BIG. Maybe not No Man's Sky big, but pretty big.

Step two: Add new creatures to the outside of main campaign realm. Make Magellan unable to travel there by fuel/distance limitation.

Step three: DLCs will upgrade Magellan to be able to safely travel further outside to see and meet NEW THINGS. Who wants to fool around in the same space anyway, right?..

*The stars only represents the in-game density on a galaxy map and not the quantity.

**The map is round, border-less.

This will keep exploration desirable, all creatures will be new and fresh. You might also add a bit more planet types there too... Win/Win situation in my estimation.

hmmmm, I'm not convinced by *not* spawning new creature releases in existing space. Say originally I can see type "A" creatures in the stars I can explore. Then some DLC later I can also find "B" creatures in different stars elsewhere entirely. But "A" only on planets in this set of stars. And "B" only in that set of stars. That would imply some strange genetic co-evolution that is present in specific set of planets but not on others.

Also I don't like the idea of having to switch to new areas to see new content.

Imagine I finished the main game, then 2 months later I get the DLC and decide to play the main campaign again. The DLC advertises these 10 new creatures. But I never see them in the main game, because the stars I visit are the same I visited before.

I'm advocating for one big map. So, no switching to new areas. Your ship is just not capable of reaching them without a certain tech that's would be introduced in dlc.

Creatures "A" would be only be in the main campaign area. The dlc area(s) will still have those creatures (maybe in lesser amounts) + dlc "B" creatures to keep old players interested in exploring. The next dlc will have A, B and C and so on.

If you're restarting your main campaign with dlc added then I guess there could be an option to use all creatures available.
