So I tried to design one from scratch. I was like, where is the front?!? I saw a bunch of cone points pointing in all directions. And I was like great, how am I supposed to know where is the front. Cuz Last thing I want is designing a bunch of ships flying sideways into battle.
When you start a new ship the face of the origin cube that points to the left bottom direction is the front of the ship.
Hehehe yea...
I came across the same question as the OP... a few seconds later i selected an active engine component and threw it on.... that makes it very clear which way the ship is facing! 
Okay next question, How do I unlock Drengin, krynn models for a terran ship?
I can't figure that part out at all.
It apparently can be done but console command unlock don't unlock other race's models for a single race.
To get all the different faction's ship model when you start Galciv. click on options go to the game play tab and select the show all models. To get just the ship parts in the designer click options and then show parts from different styles. hope that helps.
