Achievements - Some old some new, some borrowed, some...blue?

Okay, so one of my favorite things that have come onto the gaming scene in the years since Star Control is the Achievement system. I feel like it could only be beneficial to integrate this into Star Control, but fun ones, not just "hue hue hue, you're playin' the vidja game!" achievements like "Take a Step" or "Fire a Gun". At one point in the past few years, just as a way to rib on each other, my friends and I came up with some achievements for SC2 that I'd like to use as examples of fun ones. Obviously a lot of these are SC2-specific, but they should convey the general idea.

Eleven Free Stars - Complete the Campaign with at least 11 liberated races.

One Man Navy - Destroy 25 Thraddash Torches with a single ship.

I Might Have Trouble If There Was One More - Destroy 25 Thraddash Torches with only your captain aboard your flagship with no escorts.

What? It Would Have Happened Eventually - Cause the Ilwrath and the Thraddash to nuke each other into the stone age.

Omnichromatic - Discover the locations of each of the Rainbow Worlds.

It's Bigger On The Inside - Map the exits of every Quasispace Portal.

Here Goes Nothing - Spend your last 10 units of fuel to escape from 10 or more hostile fleets using the portal spawner.

Camel Of The Cosmos - Complete the campaign without visiting the Starbase at Earth before beginning the assault on the Sa-Matra.  (Yes, this one is totally possible, but incredibly difficult. Takes immense patience and perseverance.)

What do you guys think?

GalCiv 3 and Sorcerer King both have achievements incorporated in Steam. GalCiv 2 had achievements too, although they were more gameplay-oriented bonuses rather than what we think of them as today.

It wouldn't be a dealbreaker if they weren't incorporated as they're really just glorified progress badges, but they are so common these days that I'd say they're almost a foregone conclusion. I'd be more surprised than not if Stardock wasn't incorporating them.

Yeah, I get that. I just feel like Star Control is one of those franchises that deserves more than just "Scanned a planet for minerals" you know?

I don't really care if it has achievements or not.  I never really pay attention too them.  They seem to be a record of inevitable milestones.  But modern gamers seem to like them and most games have them, so why not.  I'd rather have 1 more quest in the full game than acheivements, but if they are expected these days its not like it matters that they are there.

I don't think you're getting what I'm getting at. I'm saying if they're going to bother putting them in, only putting worthwhile ones in there. If it only gave achievements for random scans and such, it's pointless. But if it's for exciting things, like playing the game in a less than conventional way, then it adds something to the game.

Agreed, achievements should be more for things that you really have to achieve.

Having an achievement for scanning 100 planets? That is something that we do anyway. There is no point in an achievement for something that you have to do anyway.

The precursors for achievements were usually things like; finishing under a certain time, find all secrets, meeting all XYZ characters, Map all areas, Kill all monsters.

Those are things that are not essential for finishing a game or level an really needs a player to play hard.

Many steam achievements you see nowadays seem to be geared for kids that are addicted to this reward system through achievements. For them part of the game is collecting achievements. No matter how meaningless they could be.

IF they put in achievements I hope that it will be for worthwhile achievements that you have to go out of your way to achieve/complete.
