WCCF Tech Talks with Stardock's Brad Wardell about the Future of Galactic Civilizations III

The folks at WCCF Tech chatted with Stardock CEO Brad Wardell about Galactic Civilizations III and what the future might hold for it.

With the inclusion of the somewhat forgettable yet adorable Snathi, are there plans to make any of the other minor factions playable? The Exis Empire might make for a hilarious storyline by themselves.

Ha. Yea, one of the investments we made with the GalCiv III engine is the campaign system. It was expensive to do for us but it allows us to introduce players to lots of new alien civilizations with their own engaging stories.

Good article. Brad does not say YES to DX12 but rather says 'Eventually'. I would love to know if they entire engine needs to be 'rewritten' to support DX12. I am happy to start the project but he is going to have to give me a few pointers on how to do so. Ill donate all my time!

Anyway glad to see we are headed forward.

I wonder what DX12 means for a game like Galciv3.

I tend to associate DX12 with better graphics, but it may just be me, I don't really know.

Would using DX12 means having more processing power available for a better AI because it spends less time rendering graphics and the CPU is more available for other tasks?

Who cares about story campaigns? Nobody plays them anyway. People just play sandbox.

One of the complaints against GCII was that is was too sterile. There is tons of Gal Civ lore, but it just doesn't come across in the gameplay. These campaigns give Stardock an opportunites to make races more than just a collection of bonuses and minuses and a few unique buildings. Yeah, 99% of the time I will play sandbox. I played the original and Snathi campaigns each once and will probably never play them again, but having played them, I bring some of the flavor with me into the sandbox and have a better understanding of the races that appeared in the campaigns. Is it worth the dev time? I have no idea, but it does add something nice to the game.

This shows why you should not confuse hard core gamers with people.  Hard core gamers arrogantly think they are the only ones playing games and their game style is the only one that counts.  People know better and play however they want without hardcore_gamer's permissions.

I care about the campaign, it's usually the first thing I play on any game whenever there is one.  I'd like an expansion on the campaign, personally, but I realize I must be in the minority and I don't want to pay 50$ for such a DLC.

I love well-written campaigns.

Wasn't that an early complaint about Sins, not having a campaign? I like to play them first.

One of my only bad thoughts about the game is that there should be more campaign. 'People' will vary in what game mode they enjoy most. Of course I realise people are getting SUPER angsty about that one comment but come on, they're custom levels packed with interactivity and lore, that just rules.

Anyway, good interview and I really wonder what GC3 will look and feel like in a while...
