Servo Wombo-Combos
By Alex Swaim
The phrase “wombo-combo” comes from the fighting game community, but is now used in other parts of the gaming world. It refers to any combination of skills that can take an opponent’s life from full to zero before they can do anything about it.
There are no true wombo-combos in Servo. You can’t keep an opponent stun-locked long enough to wreck them before they can run. There aren’t attacks that deal a full Servo’s worth of damage in one hit. Even with all the damage upgrades the enemy will have time to respond to your attacks before you can knock down one of their Servos.
It’s a good thing you don’t have to actually destroy them to win the fight and force an objective. And there ARE ability combos that can deal enough damage to do that. If you land one of these, your opponent will have to think twice before trying to keep you from taking whatever part of the map you want.
Wombo-combo 1: Hold Still, This Is Gonna Hurt
Some of the highest damage weapons in the game are the regular single-missile pods. At S-Cons 1 and 2 they fire a single missile; respectable, but not fearsome. But at S-Con 3 many of these pods fire 3 shots at the same damage per attack! That’s huge! The problem with those pods is that their blast radius is rather small. If your opponent notices one of your Servos enter the attack animation they have enough time to make their units run away, and those missiles do nothing.
How do we fix this? Stasis beam.
The stasis beam holds any target in place, unable to dodge the rain of high-damage/low-radius missiles sure to come their way. This works with other hard-to-hit abilities too, like Stun Grenades, but is especially good with the S-Con 3 missile pods.
Wombo-combo 2: Killing Them Softly (With a Space Laser)
This one is really tricky to pull off, but the psychological warfare to landing it is worth it.
The single-highest damage ability in the game is Orbital Strike. It does great damage - especially at higher S-Con - with a good range. If you hit it in the middle of a fight it can turn a losing battle into a crushing victory. But the Orbital Strike is also telegraphed for quite some time before it lands, including letting the enemy know exactly where it’s going to hit. When they see it coming, they’ll do anything they can to avoid it.
So what’s the trick here? Have a different Servo with a shield that has a knockback power in melee combat range, then have your other Servo put the Orbital Strike BEHIND the target. The enemy thinks you’ve missed your shot, but a quick knockback puts them right into the middle of the damage radius. That secures the hit, and makes your opponent question fighting you anytime those two Servos are together.
Wombo-combo 3: Suicide Squad
Those last two wombo-combos are great for picking off a single target with several Servos, but don’t help much if you MUST land a strong attack against multiple enemies pushing into your base. So here’s a single-Servo wombo for you: put Blink (with her Teleport power) into a Servo with an Unstable Core and a Fire Grenade.
The Unstable Core is a part that gives you a brief amount of time where your Servo deals double-damage, followed by a high-damage AOE explosion. The Fire Grenade is the largest-radius high-chance attack that inflicts the ignited status, which causes units to take extra damage. If you can get the enemy grouped together - when the enemy has multiple units selected at a time they’ll often stay grouped - then you’re all set up to swing the game with one big play.
Have Blink pop the Unstable Core to double her damage, then lob the Fire Grenade into the enemy formation. It will deal good damage and light them all on fire. At this point, your Unstable Core Servo would likely not have enough time before detonation to run up to the enemy, especially if they start running away.
Blink doesn’t have to run up to them: she can use Teleport to dive directly into the middle of the enemy group. The Teleport radius should be enough larger than the Fire Grenade max radius to make sure that you can reach them wherever they start running, guaranteeing a ignite-bonus-damage improved Unstable Core explosion onto multiple targets. If they aren’t at full health, it could easily wind up wiping out the whole enemy team - plus any drones they have underfoot!
If you go with this combo, look for some Respawn Reduction CPU parts so you can get Blink’s Servo back even faster.
There are no shortage of wombo-combos in Servo left to be found. Next time you’re looking at your Seros in the hangar, think beyond just part synergies and look into what wombos you can come up with!
