Home World "None"

Can anyone explain why the report on an alien faction always reads "Home World: None?" I checked the report on my own race, and it also read NONE???? Does it mean something other than what I assume?

That is an option for a custom race, picking a solar system with NO habitable planets.  Is this a custom race which you downloaded?

Thank you Dan, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. I know the option your talking about, The Abbydos system. It's the "burned out" class 2 planet choice. No, I'm referring to ANY race I run into. In the Diplomacy screen under report...it will show all information about that race EXCEPT home world. That always reads "None." It even reads "None" when I check the report on my own race. Now, I've created every one of these races. They all have normal Home Worlds. I've given them myself, lol. Why won't it show the name of the Home world? I've used every choice as a home world EXCEPT Abbydos. Any ideas? Anyone?

Happening on every game?  In the middle of a recent game?  Did you recently patch, or mod any files?  How is your PC memory atm?  does it happen on all small maps, with fewer races?

It definitely shouldnt be happening, you may need to open a ticket.

Hi Dan. Yes, it happens every game. I only use Insane size maps and I am using 1.03, with no mods. .I don't know how to check my PC memory ATM? Not sure what that means. Also, when I hold the cursor over an alien world, the name is there. It's just not in the reports screen. How do I open a ticket?

Well, was thinking perhaps you were "low" on memory.  Go to task manager and then performance tab to see how much avail memory you have, you may have to increase your virtual memory pool size.  Its a long shot.

Dan, it reads Memory 1.9/8.0 GB (24%).

Is that good? Lol, sorry...I'm not computer savvy.

Yes its good its only using 25% or 1/4 of your ram memory personally I would submit a support ticket on stardock own website or message Derek Paxton about it as this looks like a bug?

if you have eight gigs of memory you should probably not using bigger maps than huge maps. You should set your paging file to 24 gigs.

when you make a custom race do you pick a homeworld.

Echillion, I did submit a ticket.  Should I message Derek as well? If so, how?

Admiral, why do you say I should stay with huge? I never use less than Immense, and usually always Insane. I run 49 factions with between 200-300 planets. Never had any issues. No crashes. If I feel it starts to lag, I just save and close out. Then I run CCleaner and restart. Works every time. Am I facing issues down the road? I've never run past turn 185...just get bored and start a new game.

I dont' know what "set paging file to 24 gigs" means, lol?

Finally...yes, I always pick a homeworld for my customs.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Bottom line, should I be concerned?

No, your memory is fine.  I've got 8GB of ram as well, and I can only play the smaller maps without any page file (virtual memory, using disk space for memory, caveat is that it is slower).  However, I've only been using 8GB of virtual memory, and I have 2 slots left, so I may upgrade to 16GB of ram and be able to remove the VM and increase performance.

However, I dont play insane maps, because the micro needed, is well, insane :)  But that will all be improved in time by stardock.  I'm running a full game soak on insane to see how much it slows down late game. So far, 100 turns in about 15 minutes.  If sure it will slow down, but I'll have to soon switch players to one of the high power players....silly AI Terrans are just sitting with their thumbs up their asses, making starbases, trying to build tall, WAY too early...

go to the support part of the forum and find any of Dereks threads click on the thread then on Dereks profile pic and either message him via the forum private message system or email him both otions are there mate - hope this helps be aware the stardock staff are on annual holiday this week so may have to wait for a reply.

Dan, please clarify. You say my memory is fine, but you say you also have 8GB of ram and ONLY play smaller maps? Should I stop playing Insane maps?

I don't know a lot about computers. Mine is quite new. I purchased it in February in anticipation of GalCiv3, lmao. It's speed is 3.2mhz, 8GB ram and 1TB(Terrabyte?) of space. As I said before, no problems so far. By the way, the CCleaner trick REALLY works. I can't overstate HOW much faster it runs when I do a quick clean every 50 turns or so. It's amazing the performance difference. NO lag after cleaning.

Echillion, I will take a shot at that right now. Thanks.

By the way, I just thought of this...I have never played a game past turn 185. I always use 50 factions on an Insane map. The point is, I have not yet had a UP meeting. I was told I have to meet half the races to qualify. Could this have anything to do with it?

Please pardon my ignorance, bit can you elaborate? I have CCleaner on all of my computers, but never used it to fix a game.  Can you give me your settings as far as what you're cleaning?

Mine are just set to clean the internet caches and temp files.

I don't have a problem with the game slowing down, but if I play for many hours at a time, I get white lines running through some of the text and then it's only a matter of time before I get a CTD.  If I restart the game, everything's fine again.  Will CCleaner do the same as closing the game and restarting?

Thanks in advance.

<edit> I re-read your reply. You're also closing the game and restarting.  Is CCleaner doing something to help too? </edit>

<edit2> As far as the homeworld = "None", I played a custom race once and it said it's homeworld was "None", even though I picked New Iconia when setting it up.  Maybe it's a bug on custom races? </edit2>

Well, there is physical ram and then virtual memory which uses space from your harddrive (solid state drive, or whatever mass storage you have).  The standard amount of virtual memory that windows allocates should be fine for huge maps and smaller.  As well, windows default is that it will dynamically increase your VM as needed.....but honestly, I dont trust dynamic allocation, never have.  But if you want to change your VM:

Control Panel -> system -> Advanced system settings -> Advanced tab -> Performance Settings button -> Advanced Tab -> Virtual Memory change button

From my soak with 50 races and all minors, on an insane map, 16GB of VM should be fine, giving you approximate 24GB of memory (certain amounts of physical memory are reserved for caching the VM).  Further, I recommend to put 16GB for initial and maximum, to avoid dynamic allocation.  In my soak game, by turn 500, I was using about 16GB of memory, and each turn took about 5x the amount of time it did compared to the first few turns.  Its expected that turns will take longer, further into the game (all planets inhabited, thousands of ships to keep track of, etc)....I'm just worried for myself and others, that future content and/or improved AI will slow the game down even further.

Interesting about the CCleaner.  I wouldnt expect that to help at all.  The game reload/restart I'm sure is what may be helping you, as this game has serious memory leak issues.

Yeah, you need to meet more races to get the UP going.  I'm not sure if UP meetings get held before you meet/join/qualify.  If they coded it well, then it would happen.  However, me personally, I've always seen the first UP vote being to elect the chairperson (and of course, I ALWAYS lose that vote).

Mottikhan, I use CCleaner Free edition. I left the settings on "recommended," and noticed it includes a memory dump. Lol, I'm not particularly computer savvy, but I assumed that meant it would clean out the memory cache...if that even makes sense? Anyway, after 50 turns or so, I save the game and close it. Then I run CCleaner. It will take anywhere from 30-60 seconds to analyze, (less than 10 is a normal situation,) then around 20-30 to clean. When it's done, I start the game again and resume. I experienced those "white bars" in the beginning as well. I haven't encountered then in weeks. When I resume, the game is incredibly faster. It runs like the first 30 turns or so. I have never had a problem. I hope this helps you. I'd like to be able to offer some concrete advice with all the help the community has given me.

As for the "None," situation, thanks. I'm beginning to think your correct. I only run custom races. I may try a game with the pre-set versions and see what happens.

Dan, thank you for the explanation. I will admit, some of it is over my head...but I follow most of what you say. I will check what my VM is. I imagine you know that without my checking.

I checked... it reads "Total paging size file for all drive: 9216 MB"

Is that what you expected?   I don't really know what it means.

Dan, what exactly is a "soak" game. I know it's using the codes. Explain please, I'd like to see how my various choices effect the game.

well even though they recommend the virtual memory to be three times tam I will try your idea, and let windows do it for 1 1/2 memory.

its not me its brad who recommends only playing excessive, or insane only if you have 16-32 gigs of ram. If your system runs fine ignore.

one of the things they recommend is changing your paging file every so often

the paging file is hard drive space toact as memory. Virtual memory.

if system is fine keep doing. Thanks with cleaning tip. A little piece of advice change power options to high performance. Every co.puter I've. Seen including destops keeps this at balanced.

Thank you for the tip Admiral. Mine is at balanced. How do I change it to high performance?

I had some trouble looking that one up, too.  Google was no help. Evidently, there's a command you can use called "soak" that makes the machine play the game automatically and without human input. I still don't know exactly what it stands for, but that's evidently what it does.  I also didn't pay attention to how exactly to use the command.  I must have seen something shiny while I was reading.

It's a bug.  It's been reported. It will be addressed

Well, Stardock has contacted me and asked me to opt-in. I guess they want to see if they fixed the issue. What do all of you recommend? I'm using a few of the MODS now, and I'd like to continue. Personality traits, Planet traits, All starbases mine, Reduced nebula, worthwhile resources,(I really like that one,) military starbases and longer AOE. Will most of them still work?

now that you have power options in the bottom right side of the screen unless you moved the taskbar either right, or left click the icon on the list either click more power plans, or change power plans, then select high performance. Either apply, and then ok, or simply close put of this. Only remember if you have a labtop this will use up your battery more. For some reasons
