How do I edit my custom created faction?

How do I edit my custom created faction?

I just created a faction and would like to mess around with the .xml file to make some changes.  Where can I find it, I looked in the mygame\galciv3 folder where I placed the custom race forground and emblem art, but can't seem to find the .xml file for the race I just created.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

If you created it in-game, it's stored as a .faction file, which isn't editable.  You can make some changes in game by using the COPY button to make a copy of it and then changing the copy, going back and deleting the original when you're done.

Oh.  How can I create one without using the ingame create option?  Is there a base file I can copy from?

You're going to need someone with a lot more XML experience than me to answer that one.  This thread has a complete race mod with its own tech tree and ships, so it might be more than you want, but it might be a start.

I'd suggest looking at FactionDefs.XML; the internal names for the traits and abilities can be found in RaceTraitDefs.XML and AbilityDefs.XML.

I'm curious if a .XML race works without enabling mods, please keep us posted if you have success.

They don't since they are mods.

Couldn't you edit the base files in the game directory itself to create an .xml race without having mod enabled?  Not sure why you would want that since it can screw up the game without having a way to reverse it.  I mean outside of just uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

You can do that, yes. And you can just make Steam verify the game files, much quicker than a full reinstall.
