Game not playable

Is anyone else getting severe game slow down around the 100 turn mark?
Im only messing about, medium map only a few races, and its on default difficulty and at turn 100, or near enough too, the game has become unplayable, cannot even move the screen about with it taking about 30 seconds to catch up to me, let alone try and move a ship.

I'm more or less just learning the game and its differences from GC2, so there really isn't much going on.
Checked both CPU and RAM usages and neither are significantly raised.

Core i5 3570k
16bg RAM
GTX 560TI

Thanks.

PS.

The above was yesterday, i am now at turn 140 and the game is so slow it is unplayable. And i dont mean the time between turns, thats not too bad actually, but even a simple task of moving the screen about takes about 30 seconds to do, or clicking on a starbase or a ship....the game is just lagging behind a huge amount.
If i zoom right out, its not too bad though.

Very reminiscent of the memory leak that was in GC2 DA (i think it was).
and its not like my RAM and CPU are taxed...at the games worse cpu is at 3.2.% and ram at 1977.7mb.

Is anyone else seeing this, im not seeing threads about it, so i guess not. Have the devs seen it?

Hey Neilo, how's it going (apart from not too well game-wise based on your post)?

I haven't managed to get a game as far as turn 100 yet - I get to 60 or 70 then decide I could do better in the col rush, or need to try something different in the race setup - so not encountered any similar problems yet. The only time I am seeing any laggy effects is when the game is transitioning to or from strategic view - but it's a few seconds at worst. I've noticed that at the minimum strategic view zoom, some areas of the main view are still being rendered in full 3d - wondering if that could be an issue for an older card (I only run a 650TI myself). Wouldn't explain why it only happens at turn 100 though.

I'm playing immense or bigger, abundant everything, suicidal, all stock AI races, pirates off (as I read somewhere they were causing issues). Usually having 80-ish planets by the time I decide to try something different.

Core i7 920 o/c'd to 3.33Ghz, 12Gb RAM, 2Gb 650Ti, SSD (shouldn't matter unless your are excessively paging - unlikely).

There is definitely a main memory leak (or more accurately speaking a garbage cleanup) problem, as going back to main menu from a game in progress does not release any memory - but that shouldn't affect a game in progress with 16Gb RAM.

I am inclined to think there maybe a leak going on with GPU RAM that is contributing to this... do you transition between strategic / rendered views much? How much RAM does your 560Ti have? I have seen something very similar in another game, where GPU RAM was not being released between instances. You could try running a GPU monitoring tool (make sure it isn't overheating, confirm free memory etc) to eliminate that.

If I can focus enough to get to turn 100 and beyond, I'll let you know... but, well, new shinies to play with - you know how it is

This sounds like, to me, that you're running out of video card memory.  Is there something else on your system that's using your graphics card?

Mag - Great to see you man! Need to bring the old gang back together...Where is Mumble i wonder?
Yeah this is best effort i had made, i have restarted quite a few times, just trying to really nail that early colony rush (still havent, but didnt do too bad this time). The nerfing of the amount of credits your surveyor finds hurts my early game style i think. Still playing it like GC2 ;)

Up until i noticed the issue i wasn't scrolling in an out at all, after setting the view to my desired level. (just in from icon view about two wheel clicks).
yeah like you say, it's an older card, only thing letting my system down really. It only has 1GB, but i would have though that to still be sufficient.
Enjoy the game mate, hope ill be seeing more of you!!

Brad - Hi mate, been a while! Glad to be back! :)
Like Mag suggested ill run some monitoring tools to double check, but no, nothing. When the issue first arose, i saved the game, restarted the system and went at it again, but to no avail. Nothing running but standard win 8, steam client and the game.
This is not something seen too often then in your experience then Brad?

Could very well just be my card.

Im going to remove game form my computer as it is causing numerous issues with my computer and will not be purchasing another stardock product.  Was really looking forward to this game, but with the crap that was just released, i feel like I have been robbed.  Galactic Civilizations II was so much better.  Should of waited at least another 3 - 6 months before releasing it.

@Neilo So I have the same CPU as you and 16gb of coursair dominator ram. So same specs there. However I am running an xfx Radeon HD 6970. I don't buy nvidia since issues about 15 years ago with them so I am a bit outta date on the specs of their products. But the only hardware difference between our rigs is the video card (and maybe the sound card, I dont use onboard sound I have one of the newer soundblasters, I forget which one.) so I'm not sure how the 6970 stacks with yours specs wise, but I can play a full game with no hits at all to performance.

Well I did a quick google and here are the spec difference between ours. http://www.hwcompare.com/11164/geforce-gtx-560-ti-448-vs-radeon-hd-6970/ so overall mines a little stronger and I am running the 2gb video ram version of the card so I have double your video memory. So maybe frogboys theory is correct? I need to buy a new video card probably soon, I have had this one since day 1 when they cost $400.00.

Games don't cause problems with computer stability. Educate yourself before opening your mouth and looking like a ignorant fool.

More importantly fix your system since that would be where the issue is.

Dragon. Same exact ram even! I do use onboard sound. Onboard 5.1 is enough for me.
A quick google search tells me your card is a 2GB card? I'm as out of touch with amd/radeon gear as you are with Nvidia. I have always likened nvidia/radeon to a chev/ford rivalry. ;)

With what Mag, Brad and yourself have said, i am more and more very suspicious of my GPU. I would have thought 1GB was enough. Even with standard clock speeds.
I've d/l gpu-z and will fire up the game and see what i see.

I got to say that GC3 is a solid game and is currently better that GS2 so I must disagree with your most disagreeable post. Yes it has problems as any game first released does, but Frogboy and the gang are busting their a$$e$ to nailed down the issues.

I have same processor and I bumped up to 16 gigs ram. I also moved the game to an SSD and got a GTX 970 (4gigs onboard ram). Indeed its your video ram which is causing the slowdown. I play on insane and have ZERO crashes or issues. However around turn 180 or so my time between turns can range from 10 seconds to up to 15. I just let it think, knowing that all FOUR Cores are wizzing away with data and bam, next turn is up. Aside from this (slight) slowdown towards mid-late game. I am having ZERO issues.

Game play is AWESOME. AI is challenging! And most of all I am literally wasting DOZENS of hours per DAY playing! Fun indeed!

Charlie, rather than come to a thread and hijack it. Why not submit a ticket along with an upload using the new tool Stardock has?

You are obviously in the very very tiny minority of people who cannot play it. I suspect it is likely your hardware.

Anyway hope you have better luck!

Neilo, looks like you are not alone... https://forums.galciv3.com/465897/page/1/#3553948

I find reply number 3 in that thread interesting - looks like mostly affecting laptops and the machine possibly switching from using dedicated GPU for full rendered view to using integrated GPU in the non-rendered strategic view.

Now, your i5 3570k has an integrated Intel HD4000 GPU - could it possibly be doing the same thing?

Mangunmaniac raises a good point. I have my intergrated gpu disabled in bios. Is yours? If not I would go into bios and disable it, might be having a conflict of some type.

Hey guys, interesting question. I will check in bios, not something i had ever thought to check, to be honest.
Good new is though, the patch seemed to fix what ever was going on. I waited till i had a good few days of game play under my belt, same game, but im nearing turn 300 and all without incident since the patch.

I have had gpu-z and easy boost running the entire time, and even though the gpu is being taxed, ~ 75% load when playing, its going along quite nicely.
System ram is at about 4gb of use. Does that track with others?

the big test will be on an insane map with lots going on, but smooth sailing atm.

Which is odd, since i don't recall seeing anything in the patch release notes that would have an impact on this. Not that i'm complaing.

I'll read that thread and I'll check the bios, thanks guys.
