Pirates = separatists? Idea for improvement

Let me preface the whole thing by saying: That I don't mind pirates being an active part of the game. However I feel like their purpose being primarly an early game nuisance. As it stands they are little more than an aggressive separatist faction. They lack actual pirate character so to speak.

So here's my idea:

  • have separatists actually exist in a game as scale of your system's morale, have them act like pirates do right now
  • have pirates still infesting ship junkyards
  • in times of peace pirates should primarily focus on disrupting resource and local cash flow as well as any trade, in times of war have them act as privateers

I think they should def. attack / leech of trade routes some how, and possibly even colonize a planet / guard near by planets.

Is it currently possible to raid or blockade trade routes? If it is, then pirates should definitely do that. And privateers would be a very welcome addition.

Also, I agree that there should be separatists on your low morale colonies. But if they succeed in separating, I don't want them to become a generic "rebel" faction. They should become a major (or maybe minor) with their own name and leader. Essentially a new fresh faction added in the middle of the game.

That's a good idea. We can look into similar feats in other 4X games. Civilization V has pesky separatists spawning near cities with low morale, however technically those are barbarians hostile to everyone. Sins Of A Solar Empire has pirates that actually pack a punch and provide black market services where you can buy resources and act as mercenaries attacking those civilizations that have the highest bounty assigned to them by other civilizations.
