Battle viewer, first look OMG!

Battle viewer, first look OMG!

With the first “crude look” at the Battle viewer, all I can say is WOW you guys rock!  I can hardly wait to play with it.  Battle tactics and ship design looks to be a really big part of GC3.  In GC2 I could build a bad ass ship without too much regard of what I would be going against and really had no problem (or fun) with battles.   I know SD been saying how great the new system will be, and it looks like they will deliver.

Will we be getting technical details on combat .. specifics on range, damage, fire rate..  and approximate damage equations?   Hope so, cause it looks like we are going to need it!

As it seems for me, developers are just too lazy. As a fan of this seria I'm disappointed.

Just because they choose not to do something, doesn't mean they are "lazy".  :\     It just means that they don't think it will work in the game as is.  And since GalCiv has NEVER had anything close to tactical combat, I'm not sure how it is such a deal breaker for someone who is such a fan of this series.

If anything, giving ships combat roles is a far bigger step toward "tactical combat" than GalCiv has ever had.

For me GalCiv 2 was ideal in everything except of battles. So, in GalCiv 3 is nothing worth to buy it as a new game. At some moment it is worse then Twilight of Arnor.

I've played both and believe me I am quite sure that "no tactic" IS for the better.

First the game is at beta stage of development yet (though release is rumored to be not far) And as the veta it is having things to be developed and so far it is:

a) Stupid ai which in this version designed to focus on war and weapon research to test out space battles (see the tag at the top of the page) and to workout the bugs all the way down the last ship weapon and design.

b) I've already told you that to win a war you must focus more on managing your empire then on fighting battles. When I read that:

They had defeating my fleets with their overpowered ships with nice shields and lasers

is the direct notice that you managed your civ poorly and havent developed nicer shield and lasers to compete with the enemy. So you've lost your war before it even begun! No tactic battle would help you there (unless unlikely case that you find a way to exploit ai's stupidity. But exploting=cheating to me.)

You could also work more on diplomacy to buy you some allies. Or on economy to buy some nice ships while stupid beta 4 ai sells them cheap. And a lot of other stuff too. So learn and you'll beat it I'm sure.

Well, now we're into personal taste.  But I would say that as a fan of GC II, GC III is a MUCH better game already in its current state.  The only thing I personally miss is being able to spy on planets, but that's coming eventually.  Or some sort of espionage system at least.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that the only things that TotA had (which, I will remind was two expansions past the base game) that GC III as currently stands is the espionage system and ship experiernce points.  The only other thing missing is some of the major races, but, AIUI, they will eventually number to 16 over the lifespan of the game.  Which will be more than GC II had at End of Life.

For me, GC III is SO much better already than GC II, that I find complaints that it hasn't changed much to be curious at best.

And if you're still not convinced just imagine it:

The enemy had made a slightly stronger empire then you. And declared war on you. With that tactic mode of yours you would manage to repulse their assault. Oh well says the enemy. Then they begin to work to grow their empire larger, more economically prosperous, research powerful. Then (if you haven't mastered the game yet) they'll beat you in this race. And when your second with them begins you'll find that their fleets are even larger and more powerful. And that you genius tactict no longer can help you hold them back. Only to slow their inevitable advance. They will be slowly grinding your empire, each bite making you weaker. This may take hundreds of turns on largest maps but you will see battle lines drawing closer and closer to your homeworld. There is still many ways to save yourself. But the "tactic" will not be the one of them.

Wow, this topic just never dies >>>>> Tactical vrs Strategic.

Confirmed: There will be NO tactical control of your ships in battle at release.

There are over a dozen threads here and on Steam forums. The vision of the Developers has always been a grand (Strategic) view and never to have tactical control of your ships.

Ok this thread can rest....

That sentences have especially surprised me for both galciv2 expansions are quite poor. I prefer to think of them like alpha-version og GC3 =)

Their most failing component is the ai. It had so many flaws in it that half of the games were ruined and cut short at the beginning. I still remember that feeling of frustraition when I notice again and again how half the ai-s fail to colonize more then 4-5 worlds from the perfect start position. How one ai who haven't glitch this one time seizes all the galaxy in a colony rush. How they never do diplomacy not with anyone unless I initiate it myself. How evils build their world like crap always focusing on guns and then on more guns. How good races don't build anything to defend themselves and fall in some around 100-150 turns virtually without resistance. How there is no need for the spies for most important and strategic information (like number of worlds and ships) becomes known after the first contact. How there is those stupid political parties that have no influence on the goverment other than some bonus. How I do always get my party to win lowering taxes into zero a week before elections. How there is no pirates and until the wars begin the game is booooring. How there are a miriad more things that intended to be yet were never finished.

So tell me how did you ever come to like these expansions?

PS It gives me shivers to think that any of these will be in GC3 that I so impatiently wait to be released.
