Music Review: The Veronicas "Untouched"
The Veronicas
Untouched
Album: Hook Me Up
Year: 2007
Jessica Origliasso is missing something without her crush in the good “Untouched.”
Picturesque strings open the single, setting a devoted tone. She glances over to him to see how he’s doing. Judging his expression, he seems to be going through of the motions of the conversation with one of his friends. He returns her glance with a half-smile. She wishes they could be open. However, he’s still with his girlfriend. She knows she will be hit with the “other woman” and blamed for the demise of her boyfriend’s relationship. Despite their messy start, it’s the best decision for them. They can talk about her all they want. They don’t know the situation. (“I go ooh ooh, you go ah ah/Lalalala, Lalalala/I can't lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie/I wanna wanna wanna get get get what I want/Don't stop/Give me, give me, give me what you got got/Cause I can't wait wait wait any more more more more/Don't even talk about the consequence/Cause right now you're the only thing that's making any sense to me/And I don't give a damn what they say, what they think think/Cause you're the only one who's on my mind/I'll never ever let you leave me/I'll try to stop time for ever, never wanna hear you say goodbye.”)
In the chorus, no one can ever compare to him. She has tried to get over him and couldn’t. She has to have him in her life. (“I feel so untouched/And I want you so much/That I just can't resist you/It's not enough to say that I miss you/I feel so untouched right now/Need you so much somehow/I can't forget you/Been going crazy from the moment I met you/Untouched/And I need you so much.”)
He inspires her. She wishes he had his courage. She respects that it’s going to take him some time to extract himself from his relationship. They live together and he’s still figuring out how to handle it. It’s a huge upheaval in his life. For his family and friends, the news will be unexpected. However, the relationship is empty for him. His girlfriend is his safe choice. She consoles him, telling him that it’s between them. No one has to know exactly what wrong. They belong together. She’ll stay with him through thick and thin. (“See you, breathe you, I want to be you/Alalalala, Alalalala/You can take, take, take, take, take time, time/To live live the way you gotta gotta live your life/Give me, give me, give me all of you you/Don't be scared/I'll see you through the loneliness of one more more more/Don't even think about what's right or wrong or wrong or right/Cause in the end it's only you and me/And no one else is gonna be around/To answer all the questions left behind/And you and I are meant to be so/Even if the world falls down today/You've still got me to hold you up up/And I will never let you down (down.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she repeats the song’s title. (“Untouched, untouched, untouched, untouched, untouched/Alalalala, Alalalala/Untouched/Alalalala, Alalalala.”)
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
The Veronicas’ high-paced vocals brim with intensity, ready to pounce at any free moment. It contrasts the strings well, giving it the single some moodiness and conflict.
The underappreciated “Untouched” deserves to be discovered.
