Mozilla dumps Google; Yahoo becomes the default search engine

"Mozilla announced on Wednesday that it will dump Google in favor of Yahoo as its default browser. 


The deal is for five years, but the financial data was not released. Google had been the default browser for Firefox for a decade. But Firefox is now opting for a "a more local and flexible approach to increase choice and innovation on the Web, with new and expanded search partnerships by country," according to the company.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mey said: search has been "an area of investment and opportunity" for the company in recent years. "It's also a key growth area for us—we've now seen 11 consecutive quarters of growth in our search revenue on an ex-TAC basis. This partnership helps to expand our reach in search and gives us an opportunity to work even more closely with Mozilla to find ways to innovate in search, communications, and digital content. I'm also excited about the long-term framework we developed with Mozilla for future product integrations and expansion into international markets." "

I use Google Chrome about 90% of the time now, so this isn't a huge deal for me. More or less just another reason not to go back to Firefox. However, I can't even recall the last time I used YAHOO for anything, including email or as a search engine. I think the last time I visited Yahoo was when Geocities was still active and that was only because Geocities was a free place to build a website.

If Mozilla makes it that I cannot change  or choose the search engine I want to use in Firefox, then it will be a complete bye-bye to Mozilla.

Even with Chrome, I use DuckDuckGo as my search engine. Oddly, in Europe, despite the EU wanting to separate Goole Search from the rest of its services, Firefox will be keeping Google as its default search engine in Europe (http://searchengineland.com/google-firefox-europe-209378).

So, Europe wants Google "broken up". It's almost amusing. Google can buy and sell Europe and still make a profit. The whole thing is about the selling of 'preferred ads' 'relevant' to the user. If the user has a brain, he can use any search engine he prefers.

 

"Nov 21 (Reuters) - The European Parliament is preparing a non-binding resolution that proposes splitting Google Inc's search engine operations in Europe from the rest of its business as one possible option to rein in the Internet company's dominance in the search market.

European politicians have grown increasingly concerned about Google's and other American companies' command of the Internet industry, and have sought ways to curb their power. A public call for a break-up would be the most far-reaching action proposed and a significant threat to Google's business.

The draft motion does not mention Google or any specific search engine, though Google is by far the dominant provider of such services in Europe with an estimated 90 percent market share. Earlier on Friday, the Financial Times described a draft motion as calling for a break-up of Google."

I guess the EU thinks it's less of a monopoly than Google. Hypocrisy at its best.

They don't seem to realize that the people can make their own choices...Bing, and all the other search engines could have been freely chosen by the Europeans and still can be...they chose Google. So, in the best of the all wise "we know better than you, so we have to protect you" mentality, the EU is swooping in.

Default means just that.  Gandhialf is right.  You'll still be able to use any search engine you wish.

Yes, and if the one you wish to use is not included in the drop down menu you can add it in Manage Search Engines.

Nah, seriously, it is a new search engine that's not ad supported, so there are NO ads in your results.

It's at least 2-3 years old, but not only is it advertising free, you aren't tracked, and your searches are anonymous.

It was bought by Union Square in 2/2011...as for why you didn't see posts about it? I know I've posted about it...here: http://drjbhl.joeuser.com/article/419194/How_to_get_your_privacy_under_control first time...after tazgecko told me about it.

I never choose not to read... it's just that sometimes my eyes aren't open when I come to the forums. :grin:

You will also remember that I took 2 long periods away to sort issues out, so it's possible I missed the post as I didn't trawl too far back upon re-entry.

As for being wounded... physician, heal thyself.  And not too heavy on the pain meds. ;P

I never did spank you sufficiently for your absences, which were not excused - by me, anyway.

You were an AWOL pirate...which is the worst sort of pirate actually, so there's no using that as an excuse, I'm afraid.

 

You have a great deal of atoning and humble begging ahead of you to look forward to before you get your 'pirate in good standing' standing (so to speak) back.

Spank my arse.  Well that's what you were supposed to do, but that feather duster never left a mark.

Ya know, I was so disappointed that I went down to Mistress Flagella's and paid her 20 bucks to put me across her knee.

Now that WAS a spanking.  It had the usual arousing effect.... which cost me another 50 bucks. :blush:
