Lips Are Movin’
Album: Title
Year: 2014
Meghan Trainor can’t believe a word out of her boyfriend’s mouth in the oversimplified “Lips Are Movin’.”
Placating drums open the single, setting a facile tone. Part of the chorus starts the single. She says her boyfriend tells one tale after another. (“If your lips are movin, if your lips are movin/If your lips are movin, then you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby/If your lips are movin, if your lips are movin/If your lips are movin, I said you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby.”)
He gives her a quick peck on the check and apologizes for being late. His study group ran late. He begins kissing her, placing his hands on her butt. She pushes him away and asks him if he’s only interested in her for her body. She tells him he’s taken her for granted and he won’t be able to find another girl like her. He’s a manipulator who is only out for himself. She says their relationship has gone on three months too long. She has to move on. (“Boy, look at me in my face/Tell me that you’re not just about this bass/You really think I could be replaced/Nah, I come from outer space/And I'm a classy girl, I'ma hold it up/You're full of something but it ain't love/And what we got, straight overdue/Go find somebody new.”)
In the pre-chorus, he tells her has a gift for her. She says she doesn’t wear cheap Kmart cologne that’s all over him. (“You can buy me diamond earrings and deny, deny-/But I smell her on your collar so goodbye-bye-bye, bye-bye-bye.”)
In the chorus, she says she may be inexperienced when it comes to relationships. However, she knows when someone is trying to snow her. He believes she will accept what he says and won’t question it at all. But she will show him how wrong he is. (“I know you're lyin'/Cause your lips are movin'/Tell me do you think I'm dumb?/I might be young, but I ain't stupid/Talking around in circles with your tongue/I gave you bass, you gave me sweet talk/Saying how I’m your number one/But I know you lie/Cause your lips are movin’/Baby don't you know I'm done?/ If your lips are movin, if your lips are movin/If your lips are movin, then you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby/If your lips are movin, if your lips are movin/If your lips are movin, I said you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby.”)
He collapses on the floor and sobs. He promises he won’t do it ever again. She says whatever. (“Hey baby don't you bring them tears/Cause it's too late, too late baby/You only love me when you're here/You're so two-faced, two-faced babe.”)
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
An edited chorus ends the single. (“(“I know you're lyin'/Cause your lips are movin'/Tell me do you think I'm dumb?/I might be young, but I ain't stupid/Talking around in circles with your tongue/I gave you bass, you gave me sweet talk/Saying how I’m your number one/But I know you lie/Cause your lips are movin’/Baby don't you know I'm done?”)
Trainor’s snide rap puts on airs, declaring herself the superior one. This time, though, it’s guys and not skinny girls. Nonetheless, her boyfriend could point out her awkward grammar and erroneous phrasing (it’s long overdue, look me in the eye.)
She also constantly hints and references her debut single, “All About That Bass,” showing she doesn’t want anyone to forget about her for a second. Her bass is also her slang for butt. It’s used correctly in the first verse. But in the chorus it’s put in another context. She may mean that bass is her entire personality (which also makes it less relatable). If she still means her butt then the girl is gullible and foolish, trying to save face for her humilation.
The scared “Lips Are Movin’” repeats the same formula but has an icky aftertaste that takes several cups of water to wash out.
