Tomorrow

Album: Falling Uphill

Year: 2003

A breakup is still fresh for Tasha-Ray Evin in the common “Tomorrow.”

A rackety horn opens the single, setting an off-kilter tone. An audience “boo’s” as a talk show host declares that the guy is the father. A comedian and an actor share an on-set story on another talk show. A judge bangs up her gavel and says the plantiff should’ve known better. She turns the television off and picks up a magazine from the coffee table. She reads the “trends for fall” article again. She puts it back on the table again and rests her legs on the couch. She doesn’t know what her future holds. She wishes her ex were here. (“Tomorrow just another day/Another way/To spend my day/All by my self/Starin’ at the tv screen/Flipping through my magazine/Everything is unclear/I need you here.”)

In the chorus, she goes about her daily routine. She dials her ex and then hangs up right away. She has to get out of her rut. She needs to veg out on Chinese food. Then, she has to go outside in the middle of a huge crowd and scream out her lungs until her voice is gone. She keeps telling herself the pain will pass. (“And I wake up/Put on my makeup/Pick up the phone/Nobody’s home/I need to break out/Get me some take out/Standing inside the crowd/I wanna scream out loud/I'll be ok/I'll be ok.”)

She’s been depressed for so long. She has gotten used to it. She runs through what she should’ve done, what she should be doing and wondering why it didn’t work out. She needs a break from her brain. (“Walking down this winding road/Rainy days are all I know/I have hit the ground/Staring up into the sky/Countin’ all the reasons why/My mind is spinning around/I need to breathe.”)

A variation of the chorus is sung. (“So, I wake up…I'll be ok/I’ll be ok.”)

In the bridge, she is tired of being sad and feeling worthless. It’s time to move on. He’s not coming back into her life ever again. (“Get off from the floor/I just can't take anymore/Leave that all behind/'Cause yesterday’s gone.”)

A third variation of the chorus is sung twice. (“Oh, I wake up..I'll be ok/I'll be ok.”)

Part of the first verse ends the single. (“Tomorrow just another day/Another way/To spend my day.”)

Evin’s naïve vocals ruminate over her breakup and how it seems like her entire life is over. No one will ever like her again! Wah! Nonetheless, she doesn’t really have a rocker voice. It’s far too innocent and kind.

The  depleted “Tomorrow” is very much a product of its time: pretty blonde rocker chick with semi-ok voice angsting about love with production by John Shanks.
