Music Review: Kiesza "Giant In My Heart"
Kiesza
Giant In My Heart
Album: Sound of a Woman
Year: 2014
Kiesza has a difficult time breaking up with her boyfriend in the concerned “Giant In My Heart.”
Testing synths opens the single, setting a stressed tone. He said it would end the relationship. Moving to another state was a dealbreaker. She finally got word she has the job. Now, she has to tell her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend. It’s not something she wants to do. She has tried to start the conversation several times. However, she can’t. She has to make an excuse and can no longer look him in the eye. Their relationship is done and there is nothing she can say to change his mind. (“I'm trying to pretend it isn't true/But even when I want it's like I can't get over you, over you/
Over you, over you/And every time I try to tell you why/I turn my face and tears run down my eyes/It's over now, over now/Babe it's over now, over now.”)
In the pre-chorus, she wants to relive their first year together. She wants to remember how their silly in-jokes began and their long drive to her aunt’s house. He helped her make who she became. She will continue to love him after he’s moved on. (“So give me all the magic/Just give me all the magic that we made/It's like a giant in my heart babe/This love is greater than the heartbreak/So give me back the moments/Just give me back the moments that we made/It's like a giant in my heart babe/This love is greater than the heartbreak, yeah.’)
In the chorus, she wonders if the hurt will ever go away. He’s the one person she truly ever loved. Every guy will be compared to her ex. (“What's the point of going through/All the pain of leaving you?/What am I supposed to do?/In my heart there's only you/Baby I can't lose you.”)
Her friends and family have been calling to see how she’s doing. She answers fine, dealing as well as expected. However, she still has a picture of them together on her phone. She glances at every so often and touches it. Whenever people talk about him with her, she shushes them and badmouths him. (“I'm lying to myself that I'm okay/But when I see your photograph I'm still not over you, over you/Over you, over you/And every time I will your love away/It comes back in a rush reminding me/It's over now, over now/Over now, over now.”)
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
In the bridge, she tried to be a good girlfriend to him. However, she has the fairy tale idea of love. She’ll have the bitterness. She was there for him whenever she needed. She was willing to compromise and he wasn’t. She realized that how cruel and unfair other people can be. She’s lonely now because of it. He will be with her forever. (“I tried my best, and I'll confess, I'll love with less/I gave the most, and took the loss, from what I chose/I fought for you, you lead me to, a painful truth/And now I wait, without a heart to save/My love, my love, my love, my love/My love, my love, my love, my love/ My love, my love, my love, my love/My love, my love, my love, my love/There's no escaping you.”)
The chorus is sung again to end the single.
Kiesza’s nervous vocals don’t know if she will ever find someone like her ex again. She dwells on her future, wondering if she will ever have one. It’s all too much to take at once.
The fretful “Giant In My Heart” is step up from the previous single, giving a taste of what 90s dance was like rather than falling knee deep into it completely.
