Text Me In The Morning

Album: Pop Psychology

Year: 2014

Andy Glenn hopes for more than a one-night stand in the grinding “Text Me In The Morning.”

A puzzled guitar slides to and fro to start the single, setting a confused tone.  He would give her adoring looks. She would extend their conversations each time she saw him. The flirting back and forth lasted for a year. However, she was having car trouble and called him to help her out. After he jumped her, she kissed him passionately. He ended up following her back to her house and they had sex. Her dad told him to be careful when it comes to sex and not to rush. But he couldn’t deny his emotions. (“We danced a tango 'till our heads got dizzy/I felt your body heat, a damsel in distress/My daddy warned me not to get so busy/And suddenly I'm watching you take off your dress/And I couldn't stick around.”)

In the chorus, as he’s getting dressed, he tells her to send him a message and let him know how she’s doing. She tells him she’s still a little hungover. He compliments and says she looks beautiful despite her bedhead. He needs to know how she feels sober. (“So text me in the morning/Tell me you still love me/I don't believe a single word/You tell me you're tipsy/I tell you you're pretty/We could spend the night if you're still sure/But text me in the morning.”)

He still can’t believe they had sex. However, it may be just a fling. She was raised to not expect much and do only what she had to do. He thinks she’s capable of achieving better things. He says he isn’t saying that. (“Woke up all soaking wet from last night's fever/Smelling like cigarettes and broken promises/Your mother said, "Don't be an overachiever"/I please her, oh please girl/I never did believe her/And I'll never tell you why/I'll never tell a lie.”)

             The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, it’s been a week and he hasn’t heard from her. He feels used and as though he made a huge mistake. He’ll always think of her and what they could’ve had. He wants a real relationship with her. (“Tears on my phone/Feeling so alone/I'll never let you go, you've got the best of me/When all the other boys just want your sex/I just want your text/In the morning/Right, in the morning.’)

            The chorus is sung again.

A variation on the verses ends the single. (“We danced a tango 'till our heads got dizzy (text me in the morning)/I felt your body heat: a damsel in distress (text me in the morning)/Woke up all soaking wet from last night's fever (text me in the morning) /Smelling like cigarettes and broken promises.”)

Glenn’s stagy vocals seem to think he’s at a comedy revue. He’s trying out play it as lightheared and cool with the scene. However, the lyrics are written to be angsty and serious. It’s doubful he’s being ironic. There is not enough self-awareness.

The  stodgy “Text Me In the Morning” will want a tutorial on how to sext next.
