Jake Roche tries to convince a girl to go out with him in the entitled “Wait On Me.”
An edited chorus opens the single along with huffy synths, setting a detached tone. He tells her he has her all figured out. There are some moves he would love to do to her. (“Wait on me/I know how to love you./And I wanna love you some more/Wait on me/Come a little closer/Wanna be the one to explore/A little trouble never hurt nobody/Oh I want to feel your body/Wait on me/I know how to love you/And I wanna love you some more.”)
He tells her he really likes her. All she has to has to do is agree to a date. However, she can’t hurt him. Although he’s not willing to open himself up entirely, anyhow. He doesn’t want her to toy with him. (“Take it, take it/I'll give my heart to you for free/Don't you break it, break it/Along with every piece of me, yeah/I'll go the distance but not all of the way/Say what you mean to me, and mean what you say, yeah.”)
In the pre-chorus, he doesn’t want to be an ex-boyfriend of hers. He’ll be the perfect boyfriend for her. He says she can continue flirting with the other guy but she’s going to come back for him. (“I never wanna be your ex-man/I'll never make you feel ignored/You can go and find your next man/But I know what you waiting for.”)
The full chorus is sung. (“Wait on me…And I wanna love you some more/
Some more, more, more/Some more, more, more.”)
She puts her head down and then looks up at him. He asks her what’s wrong. She shrugs her shoulders and responds that she’s fine. He really wants to let out a groan and go “ugh!” She obviously does like him in some way. Why doesn’t she get it? (“Say it, say it/I know there's something on your mind, girl/And I hate it, hate it/When you just act like you're okay, yeah/I wanna be the one and all that you need, yeah/I listen to your heart, I know how it speaks, yeah.”)
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
In the bridge, he says he’s a decent guy. He isn’t going to hurt her. Her feelings have changed towards him, which he’s noticed. (“I wanna love you so more/Come closer/You know ya, don't feel like before/I'll give you what you want 'til you want it more/In your head, in your heart, like never before/If a good thing is what you're waiting for/Then don't you look no more.”)
The chorus is sung again to end the single.
Roche’s know-it-all vocals believes he is the absolute person for his crush. He badgers her as he pursues her, telling her what she wants. His expectations are also unequal: she has to be his forever and he is allowed to let her in on a need-to-know basis.
The apish “Wait On Me” is worrisome for Adam Levine. He may find Roche lurking behind his Voice chair, saying “I want your career! And the adulation! And the supermodel wife! All of it!”
